I checked the in-laws Dunstans last night. They are getting close to opening up. I’ll have to check each day now. There’s at least 5 or 6 burs that look plump and should have 2-3 nuts per bur. So I should be able to gather 10-15 nuts. The problem is I’m headed north on Friday night and won’t be around on Saturday. There’s a gray squirrel waiting for them too. The father in-law said a flock of turkeys went through their yard yesterday as well.

Still no action on the chestnuts yesterday so I’m going to harvest them tomorrow if they’re still there.

I decided to beat the squirrels and harvested the burs today. They were just starting to open and probably would’ve tomorrow but, we’re due for rain tomorrow. I’m hoping for 10-12 viable nuts out of this bunch. They usually have 3 nuts but, each has to be pollinated. I’m pretty sure this one has at least one pollinated nut and one is definitely unpollinated.

3 of the burs have popped open with a total of 8 viable nuts in them. 5 more burs left to open. Looks like I should be getting 15-20 nuts to plant. If the larger tree had burs this year I’d have had 200+ burs. Hopefully next year. The good news is I can finally tell my 92 year old father in-law that his trees produced nuts!! He’s been waiting patiently since I planted the seedlings in 2013.

I’ve opened 5 burs and I’m up to 12 nuts. This bur has two viable nuts and one unpollinted. This one had 3 viable nuts. This one in the center had 3 nuts and one dud. They usually only have 3 nuts so this one would’ve been rare if the 4th nut had been pollinated. This one had 1 viable but and two duds.

I ended up with 21 nuts and 4 duds out of the 8 burs. I didn’t think the smallest bur would have viable nuts but, it had 3 so I’m going back to the in-laws tomorrow to check the 2 remaining burs. They were small so I thought they weren’t pollinated. Maybe they’ll still be there in the morning.

I got an update on some of my offspring. I grew this chestnut from seed and gave it to a friend in Vermont in 2015. It had dieback one spring from a late frost after green up but, is growing well now. He said 2 of the 3 I gave him had catkins this year but, no burs so hopefully they produce some burs and nuts this year. He removes the cages to mow and clear competition. The big apple tree in the left corner is a blue pearmain. It dates back to the late 1800s.

Just leave the rope trip engaged. A couple pieces of metal for the 3pt, a wheel and paint costs that much? Me don’t think so.

Me? I would be unbolting a 10’ drill. Keeping half and selling the other half so mine was free.

I’ve got to head up to my in-laws tomorrow to check on their chestnuts. I was at an orchard in Vermont today and checked the guy’s chestnuts. He’s got two large ones but, there’s a large sumac in between them that’s blocking the wind pollination. The catkins stood out on the larger one.
