Weird selection of trees? I could possibly line up a crew, but to find those trees now...could be tough.
Spruce, and pine would be much easier

Here is what I found out: They need to plant 7,400 trees, mow and thin the existing trees...by September Trees they can choose from are: white oak, white ash, black walnut, or sugar maple) (Thinning the existing trees scares me, sounds like the DNR to me) They are looking to hire this out, anyone know of anyone near the metro that does this? Is white ash resistant to ash borer? White ash will likely all be dead in mn eventually. They are not immune.

How the hell can they then chose from white ash if they will all die in next couple years? Not that you know Ben.... Geez.

is that an old tree list that was made prior to emerald ash borer? I'm surprised they would recommend them since it is unlikely they will live too long.

He should be able to adjust the trees. Landowner can pick trees, as long as the meet the approved list.

I agree that ash would be a bad choice, no point, I cannot believe that was a suggested species. As for the others, you can try wallace woodstock nursery out of Nielsville, WI (715) 743-2980. They have some species available some years for fall planting, don't know what delivery costs would be though. Best of luck, that's a ton of trees.

How old was this contract? Didn't they know they had to fulfill their obligation to plant the trees or did they have something pop up that stopped them from doing it? Thinning the woods this time of year with the rain you've had out there probably would do more harm than good.

I have a feeling the old man is losing it a bit unfortunately. The daughter is taking over management of the contract. At least this gave me an opportunity to start communicating with her going forward in addition to the parents. Regarding the thinning or even the planting, not a good time to do either much less with bow season a bit over a month away.

Ok, I'm not familiar with CRP plans but, sounds like they didn't fulfill their end of the deal. What happens if they don't meet the deadline? Do they get fined and/or kicked out of this program? Can they file an extension? How much were they saving a year in this plan? Is there a government manager of the CRP that checks in periodically to make sure they're doing what they're supposed to? It just seems strange that the shits hitting the fan now 5 years into the plan. Sorry to sound negative and the kicker is the things on the list would have helped the habitat. Can you imagine having 3-5 year old cuts and 1500 5 year old swamp white oaks on a property? They'd be very close to production age. I'd offer to help them get it done and put in the extra effort this fall. It may help you keep hunting in the long run. Are you interested in buying it if it came up for sale? I'd let them know that too. I hope this works out for you and them.
