Would you support spending MN tax dollars to fund a MN University lab dedicated to researching genetic markers in cwd sampled deer, and moving forward in the search for a CWD vaccine? We could learn at what age the differing genotypes are lymph, and then obex positive (if ever), discover when infected deer start to shed misfolded prions, and make progress toward a possible cwd vaccine?

This is something that would benefit ME, as a hunter, I think. So sure, I'll vote yes. Let's take some of the fraudulent daycare money and point it at CWD instead of Somali pirates.

A CWD solution would benefit so many more people than just hunters.

I am trying to vet out objections before we try and finalize the message. Any objections? Cons?

I cant think of any negatives......except some folks may object to whom is paying for the research. Some will think hunters or deer farms should pay......and not the general population. So a well prepared response would be in order. The U of M already has some work in this area....no? i.e. www.cahfs.umn.edu/blog/chronic-wasting-disease-research

They have about a $60 million annual budget. Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) The LCCMR is made up of 17 members: 5 Senators, 5 Representatives, 5 citizens appointed by the governor, 1 citizen appointed by the Senate, and 1 citizen appointed by the House. The function of the LCCMR is to make funding recommendations to the legislature for special environment and natural resource projects, primarily from the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund (ENRTF). These projects help maintain and enhance Minnesota's environment and natural resources. The LCCMR developed from a program initiated in 1963. Since 1963, approximately $900 million has been appropriated to more than 2,000 projects recommended to the legislature by the Commission to protect and enhance Minnesota's environment and natural resources.

^ I'm just looking to see what is already "out there" in the way of CWD research. Looks like a few failed, or half-hearted attempts.....or some good intentions without any financial support......or a well-thoughtout plan. I dont see many causes that could have a bigger impact on than taking on CWD and a potential solution. Should be one of the things the MNDHA promotes.....alas. Here's the UW site which lists those working on the issue and the papers they have presented to date: labs.russell.wisc.edu/samuel/welcome/cwd/

LCCMR LSOHC Lottery Bonding License revenue General fund Dept of Health Federal grant Interior Dept CDC USFW Non-profits (Sierra, Nat Con, HSUS)
There is any number of places to find that money. The health effects of CWD crossing the species barrier will be paid by all. A solution to prevent should be funded by all.

Bur’s thoughts. Keep all mention of the DNR and Deer farms out of the proposal as they are hot button issues.
A member of Jeff Johnson’s staff needs to approach the Dean’s office of the Veterinary College about setting up a chair or endowment for cwd study. I don’t know what the proper term is. Some wording about working to secure $ 1 million for 5 years to study cwd prevention and control. The study should include but not be limited to genetic resistance, study of any vaccine possibilities, disease prevention and control mechanisms.. in cooperation with other governmental agencies study of the disease. Blah, blah, blah., some of you are better on wording than me.
Sources of money could be as SD mentioned.
Leave the exact items to study up to the people who work with animal disease and keep DNR and Deer farms out of the discussion.

That's a good plan. I would like to see the funding come from the general budget rather than from the dnr's budget.

That's a good plan. I would like to see the funding come from the general budget rather than from the dnr's budget. I was thinking Lessards Sams and the other program as SD described it. LCCMR . I can not keep the two programs straight. Let’s divert some of that money for proposed elk stocking, maybe reduce some of the land acquisition for a few years, and put the money towards CWD study.

I'm all for MN funding as much CWD research as they can financially pull off, goodness knows WI has spent enough fucking money already, it will be nice to have another player in the fight.
