Close to my shabin, there's an ant hill. I try to get along with them but I don't think I can anymore. I figure they are about to go dormant, so I can scheme until next Spring. I don't know anything, so I just threw a couple ant bait poison deals from the hardware store on top of the hill. That didn't work. In fact, they've just been incorporated into the borg and the colony looks as strong as ever. Big ants, black.
I've used the old "burn a tire on top of the hill" trick before and that worked. But it's right next to my shabin. Seems extreme. Who can give me the wisdom of experience here? Easiest way to eliminate these suckers?
edit - I just read the label on the "D-Fense SC" I ordered to spray for flies. Kills ants too. I'll try that. Labels - reading is fundamental.

Maybe dump five gallons of diesel exhaust fluid on them next spring when they're up and running. That shit will eat right through metal post haste, and it's not toxic to the ground water. I have used it for stump remover as well. That shit is horrendous to breathe in. I'd put it right up there with anhydrous ammonia. If they survive that, you best just get along with them.

I like that. But, are you sure Mother Earth would approve of that?

Trappers like using the ant hill dirt to make their dirt hole sets. I'm not sure how they kill the ants but, read up on that

Probably to close to the cabin for our old method we used as kids. Multiple aerosol "flamethrower" cans and then a spade shovel with about a quart of gas. Hammer the top of the mound with the "flamethrowers" until most ants on top are dead, a few scoops down into the mound with the spade, repeat "flaming" when you hit fresh ants, then dig a hole right in the center, pour in half the gas and light it up, let it burn down, dig deeper, repeat with the remaining gas. They are either dead or will pack up and leave at that point, at least that was our experience and we had multiple mounds to deal with every summer.

I like that. But, are you sure Mother Earth would approve of that? A state apiarist told me the best way to kill ground bee nests was to boil hot water and mix in Dawn dish detergent pour it on the nest. The suds keep them from flying and the hot water kills them. That would probably work with the ants as well.

I have some ant granules that seem to work.

I am steeling the thread, but if you have one of these anthills in the right location, you can make a hunting plot out it.
Quickly rake it out, spread some fertilizer, and lightly rake again. Best if done in August in your country.
The guys that used to do this were on public land in northern Itasca county, just east of you.

When does anteater season open in MN? Does the DNR allow rampant killing of them like they do with the deer? Unlimited tags?

That reminds me of that video of those southerners that were making a food plot on a hard packed road with a packet of seed and a steel rake. It couldn't have been a 3' diameter area, and they were toting it as the best monster buck attracting plot idea on the market. I wish I knew where that video was, because it was hilarious. "You see here booger, you just shake some perfect plot on the road here and work it with this here rake. Then call your taxidermist because yer gonna have every monster buck for ten counties fighting over this."

Torro. They will take it in mound and you will never see another one. Stuff works awesome.

We used to use some ant killing stuff in tiny granule form that you sprinkle out of a can when we had black ant hills pop up around the yard. I can't remember the name, but it was from Fleet Farm and it works great and you don't have to worry about harming anything other than the ants.
This year I had a colony of ants invade my trail camera that was inside of a steel bear proof box. I sprinkled a few drops of that Terro ant killing drops and it killed them all in a couple days.
But if that doesn't work, you clearly should go with dynamite.
