Bare Root ROD planted this spring. Doing well so far. All 20 in the row have put on good growth. Only a couple show browsing so far. They are planted along the road as part of a new windbreak I put in so that might help the pressure a bit.

Branch transplant method seems like a winner. I buried another batch by my house for transplanting next spring.

I really think this is going to work. These were planted in the fall of 2018, and they look as good as they ever have. I like it enough I’ll go for the super cuttings cage next. I should maybe get some dirt and throw it around those stems. I'm afraid the roots might be a tad exposed as that organic material from the plugs breaks down.

Have you been back to check on their progress since leaf out?

Have you been back to check on their progress since leaf out? Yeah. These are just off the lawn. They’re alive and well. I’ll get a pic today. They may not be above the grass level yet.

They’re there doing their thing. You have successfully used they're, there and their correctly in the same sentence.

Time for a bump. Any updates on these plantings. I think I found a source for cuttings along side a dirt road. When do I cut the cuttings if I want to plant them? Now and hold over through the winter or wait until February or March???

Would any of these other conservation seedlings from the N.H. state nursery be worthwhile??

Would any of these other conservation seedlings from the N.H. state nursery be worthwhile?? Yes, they all would have wildlife value. I've planted all but bayberry, alternate leaf dogwood, and buttonbush. I'm sure those 3 also have value, I just haven't planted them. Grouse (partridge to you and Art) would like the fruit from all of those shrubs/bushes. Aronia is one of the "super foods" I guess. Super high in anti-oxidants

Time for a bump. Any updates on these plantings. I think I found a source for cuttings along side a dirt road. When do I cut the cuttings if I want to plant them? Now and hold over through the winter or wait until February or March??? They're doing well. I expect they'll be well up over the grass next season. What I did, and it seemed to work fine, was just go collect cuttings and plant them all in the same effort. Didn't do any rooting hormone, soaking, or anything. I would guess I got 20-30% survival, which is fantastic for free, fast, and easy. If you want one, put ten cuttings there. If you want ten, put fifty there, an d cage it. I will say, the right cuttings make the difference. I learned there was a specific cutting that did better than the rest. Thicker Brighter colored The ones that were thinner or had old scale and scab on them didn't do as well. I rolled down to the commons and filled the suburu with whole bushes and took them back to cut up. I cut them where I had two pairs of nodes on each cutting. One went in the ground for roots, the other just above the ground. I didn't want any more than absolutely necessary above ground so there wasn't so much to support before it made roots. I bet I spent a total of 2-3 hours doing around 250 cuttings for that huge cage. When I do it again, I think I'll put 30 good ones per cage and call it good. If the site is matched, I wouldn't even do the weed mat, just cage it.
