This swamp crab has two trunks and was tied up at one time after it blew over. I am thinking about top working it with 3 or 4 crab apple scions from GRIN. I know that I should remove the double trunk, but am considering the easy way and just topworking the crab apple scion to the main branches. What do you think? Or just one trunk and one variety? online uploaderhow to upload image on website

Art,
On the top photo I see 4 main uprights. I'd take out the second one from the left to give more light to the main trunk. As for grafting I'd cut some of those limbs off shorter and graft several varieties to them and leave the main trunks. Those limb grafts will take off and you'll still have fruit until they do.
Stephen Hayes video showing those limb grafts.

Thanks, Carl. I have done a few limb grafts over the last two years, based on Stu's advice. I watched Hayes video before doing that.

I'd be tempted to whack that thing back to 4 stumps about 5' high and bark graft each one to a different crabapple (may have some long term graft union issues with regular apple varieties)

Tomorrow,I will try and get a picture of a top work on swamp crab. I cut it off about 4 feet high and put a wild applecrab on it. About a 2 inch apple that drops on Veteran's Day, more or less.

I've got a couple wild crabs here that I plan to turn into Frankentrees. I'll get started this year, and hope to continue working on them into the future.
