I purchased a Vortex PST Rifle scope. The quality was so poor I could not get it dialed in. I returned it.
I have heard mostly good things but most of that was regarding their high end stuff.

Almost all glass looks good when viewing during the day. A good test is to look through them at dusk and see how they gather light. Head to your sporting good store and arrange to compare glass at dusk. Best glass by far will be German but of course you pay for it. I would pick several quality brands and test them at dusk, pick what you like and move forward.

Anyone know or hear about these binocs, Meopta MeoStar B1 10x42. Been doing a lot of research and have not heard any thing bad. A lot of reviews put them right up there with Swarovski's. With a Black Friday coupon I can get them for about $850. A little more than I was thinking of paying but if they are as good as the reviews maybe I should. www.sportoptics.com/meopta-meostar-b1-10x42-hd-binoculars-467781.aspx

I have a set of Swarovski 10x42 elc's in green that I will sell if someone has an interest in the German glass. Very nice and I have the doubler eyepiece which makes this into a 20x spotting scope too. (I think this is about $400 option or so?). Very good condition. Retail on these binos is like $1799 plus tax....plus the doubler eyepiece. Id sell mine with the doubler eyepiece for $1100 cash. I just don't use 'em any longer. They look like new....been on a few western hunts....and always on my chest with the rubber strap / chest mount. I think I have a few shoulder strap options too I would throw in. Original case and boxes, etc. Great Binos.....actually the best you can own....especially if you hunt the west. FORE!
Edit: Starting to feel old. Gave my SIL my Kimber Montana 300 short-magnum w/scope, etc.....then gave my Liecia Range Finder to him.....now giving up my Bino's. Grin.....I guess my elk hunting days are over. I likely will buy a new golf range finder, putter and other golf paraphernalia with the proceeds....lol. It's just hard to see this good gear sit on the shelf.
Anyone want to get into benchrest shooting?.....I'd be your guy. Varmint - light and heavy / switch barrel set up. 6ppc / Kelby Panda Action 36x power Leupold scope, switch barrel, gunsmith by Dan Dowling - the best, 2 oz. jewell trigger and jewell rings, custom stock/ glue-in bedding, metal flake paint by Tom Merideth (also the best), all the right pedigree to shoot small groups (best groups were under .100")...all the right re-loading gear to make you competitive....and a little mentoring to get you started on the right path for a fraction of new (like 1/4th).....you'd be competitive from day one. I used to finish pretty well at the super shoot with this gear....and it's still top notch stuff. FORE!

Tom, sounds like your SIL married well. 😉 If you need an outlet to sell your bench rest gear we could put an ad in my Gun Clubs News letter. Minnetonka Gun Club is Probably the best club in the metro area with a large benchrest group.

Every year I look at that benchrest gear....and think I need to have it go down the road. It's so specialized that their are not many buyers for this stuff in our area. There are a number of ways for me to sell it.....I just need to get around to it. Benchrest Central has a website with a very active group of guys nationally.....and that is where I should post this stuff. Some of the stuff would mean nothing to us here. I've got a Harell Powder measure and Harell Press....which are dedicated units for this crowd, etc, etc. Funny how I could care less about benchrest shooting today.....and once it was a somewhat of passion of mine.

I thought you said best binocs under 500? What did you pay? I did say under $500 but when I started researching this brand kept coming up. Lot of reviews compared them to the Swarovski. I got them for $843.19 out the door. I also found out that Vortex are no longer made in Japan but are made in China which helped with my decision.

You won't miss the $ over the years you have them.

FedEx delivered my new Binoculars this afternoon. Fooled around a little with them and all I can say is wow. Can't wait to get back out hunting and try them out.
