Need some help fellers. I am getting a little frustrated. I have been researching CO for awhile and have until this year planned on hunting the Gunnison basin. The biologist out there say it is good with decent population of mature animals and then you talk with the outfitters and they mention it is not as good as people always say it is.
I have 10 points for mule deer in CO and was planning on hunting the Gunnison however not exactly hearing the greatest reports so now I am second guessing myself. They are also having a pretty tough winter which is another item I am watching.
My problem is I am in no mans land. A lot of preference points however not enough for the premier units and too many for the other units. We want to use up our points and then find a unit we can go back to every 2-3 years and really get to know it.
Anyone on here willing to share some suggestions on decent units to have a chance at a mature mule deer? This is a rifle hunt.
Not looking for honey holes just good first hand boots on the ground knowledge of the age structure of the herds etc...
Thanks

I haven't hunted mule deer since Colorado went to the draw statewide. I also never rifle hunted.
Questions. Did you indicate to the outfitters you were DIY? Or did you act like you were interested in booking with them. If you told them DIY, I wouldn't trust them. They would prefer DIY types don't hunt out there.
How many points do you have?
I elk hunted 76 several years ago. We saw some decent deer but I would expect them to be much lower by the time rifle season arrives.

No experience in CO. But I have seen winter kill mentioned for a lot of western states on various forums and a couple articles. Gunnison basis was mentioned as an area getting especially hard hit. Nobody will know the full impact until April, but could be a good reason to wait another year.

Agree with Westbranch, I have herd similar concerns.
You could try the eastern part of the state but you would be hunting Alfalfa fields but good animals.
