I get my red splendors as seedlings from the county when they do annual tree bundle sales - it is tough to beat the price of about $2.50 per tree. As Stu mentioned there is some variation with the seedlings though. About 75% of them end up with the small fruit that holds on the tree all winter, but 25% of them have 1" diameter fruit that drops by late fall. Freeborn has a couple of those with bigger fruit.

I'm guessing the crab I call Wild Red is a red splendor seedling. The fruit gets to maybe 1.5" and drops mid-late September.

So dried up fruit at the base of the tree, lying on the ground … Is this drought related?

I checked a trail camera and took a quick pic of my crabapple rows. The birds seem to really like these. & a few deer too . Still holding some! (pic later tech difficulties).
