They try to spread the hunting pressure by making you draw a season. I can see it on public land but on private land it could be open for any time in the season.

Why does the state get to decide for the hunter when a good time to hunt is or if it's to overcrowded for him? Count the birds, issue the right number of tags, open and close season based on breeding and nesting dates. Regulate the resource... Am I looking at this wrong? I guess I see the premise but see it as unnecessary and overreaching.

A few years back they proposed to just open the season up and have over the counter tags at the Spring Coservation hearings but it got voted down.

Minnesota liberalized turkey seasons and I think it was a mistake. I have hunted turkey in 20 some states ands Minnesota used to be my favorite eastern sub turkey state. Quality has really tanked since they opened it up.

Having multiple seasons really helps distribute pressure and it really works well in MN and WI in my opinion. I was pissed when MN changed the turkey hunting structure from the 8 seasons we used to have. Turkey hunting was the one thing that was world class in this state, so why change a good thing?
In SE MN most farmers could care less about turkeys and it is rare to get turned down when asking permission. I've actually never had a landowner turn me down in MN when asking for permission to turkey hunt if they didn't have someone on their land that season. Lots of the farmers will mark down what season you want on their calendar and turn down everyone else for that season. The problem is that most farmers have a nephew or cousin who turkey hunts, so if there was only one hunting season they will let their relatives hunt those seasons and turn everyone else down.

I can see the value in that. I just lean more towards letting the hunters figure it out instead of the government, but I do see how it would be nice to split everyone up if there was a ton of hunters out there.
