With only ten weeks left of winter, when should a guy be looking to go take willow and ROD cuttings?
Could they be started inside early? I wouldn't mind bringing pots inside to get the grow off the ground.

I've always cut my ROD once the frost was out of the ground and I could dig dirt up to fill in my pots. I always just cut them and potted them the same day and that always seemed to work pretty well. I would always put 4 cuttings in each pot to guarantee at least one or two would grow. I'm sure you could start them inside now if you are bored, but I'm not sure if the extra inch or two or growth would justify the hours of cleanup when bob tips over all the pots and spills cat feces filled dirt all over your floor.
I've planted hybrid willow cuttings in pots when they were fully leafed out and they did fine. All the leaves died, but then new growth popped up a couple weeks later. I would always soak the willows in water for a week to start the root growth prior to moving to pots.
Now that I think about it, maybe ROD would benefit from a similar treatment - I've never soaked them in water for a week prior to transplant.

I’ve started some gray dogwood cuttings inside under lights in pots for the first time, quite a few are leafing out. Didn’t do rooting hormone just keeping them wet. Mostly out of boredom, but also to experiment. I’ve also got a few acorns going in rootmaker cells and some vegetables for later transplant. Just something to get through this brutal month.

I've never tried gray dogwood cuttings before. Have you had luck with them before?

I've never tried gray dogwood cuttings before. Have you had luck with them before? Deer love 'em. Puerto Rican Shiela was bright enough to have a dog in an apartment, so it needed to be leashed every time it took a shit or piss. I walked it across the road to a wooded area full of GDwood. The browse line was precise on a solid and enourmous patch. Had to be a couple acres in size.

as far as cuttings go - I cut and "plant" mine the same day....but I do mine outside. I was told as long as the frost was gone and they had not started to wake up I was fine. I have only done elderberry though. I am planning on more elderberry and some grey dogwood this year (might try some wahoo as well as some willow). I got a 1/2 area spot I want to play with some shrubs and acorn planting to see if I can get that to work for me.
