I belong to a few facebook pages that are generally "deer habitat" related. The number of people out there who don't even know what a hinge cut is amazes me on a pretty much daily basis. The number of "what deer mineral do I use" or "what do I plant, and when do I plant it? threads daily is unreal.
I thought (foolishly) that most folks who were interested in this shit had a grasp on the basics. I was unbelievably wrong. I have a much better understanding of how and why guys like Brauker, Sturgis, Bartylla, LaPratt, Ehrlinger, and many others make a really lucrative living.
I wish I was better at self-promotion

I know several guys who started hunting late in life (takes enough money now that kids getting to hunt is becoming rare, only after they make the money that middle age brings do they start). Anyway, they didn't grow up hunting, aren't farmers, and all they see on hunting shows is plots and suppliments. So they ask the landowner they have access on if they can put in a plot but have not learned how to do it. The will and desire is there, they are ignorant though.

I think it's something that some are better at, and have gained the know how. For most it'd truly about the kill... like in Brad's thread...it's about the inches. Most think that you plant "X" and pour out "Y" you're good to go. The in depth understanding of the true management aspect or field work is extremely foreign to most. It doesn't surprise me that those are the regular questions asked.
It's like anything else, most people are lazy.

I wish I was better at self-promotion Lucrative Living? I think most guys in this industry just make a living.... But I agree with you on how many people have no Idea what a Hinge cut is. I just had a new customer show up for some bean seed looking to try and keep the deer on his land. I said what kind of bedding do you have for the deer? How much browse do you have on your land? You do realize deer require more browse than beans? Nope, he had no clue. He now is on my email list so I can send him pictures and give him tips on hinging and bedding areas!

I think I found the the group your referring to Stu and holy crap are you right,. Lots of guys giving horribly wrong info. That's the problem with a Facebook page vs a forum layout you can't easily search if your questions have been asked before

You always learn more researching yourself rather than asking but I admit some habitat things don't interest me at all so I sometimes fall into ask first mode. I know apples trees are a great tool but I can't get into to reading about them. I don't even know what 1st leaf, 2nd leaf, blah blah blah is.

I know a bunch of city slickers who like to hunt and either buy land with no idea what to do or sit on the sidelines wishing they knew. A lot of them start out focused on big bucks and develop a deeper connection with the land. I've written a couple habitat plans for friends who would have otherwise paid somebody. I enjoy watching grown men learn young man lessons like; 1) Blowing out your food plots in half light, discourages daytime usage. 2) Mature woods doesn't house many deer. 3) How you get in & out of your stands matters. Etc. These are all mistakes hunter/landowners gotta learn the hard way. Add the challenge of growing food plots, seems like a guys gotta fuck it up a few times before getting in a groove.
