I feel like I know quite a bit about deer hunting, habitat improvements and wildlife in general .....but
I know very little about apple trees, nothing about grafting etc.. To me, it's plant tree, protect tree, watch grow, hopefully produce apples.
Also not an expert on fertilizer for food plots, could not fix a breakdown of my brush mower if I tried, but other than that...
I get by

It would take me hours to write up the list of things I'm not very good at...but I think the basics of deer habitat are just that...pretty basic. Hinge cutting isn't rocket science, neither is planting clover/brassicas/winter rye/oats.
I guess maybe I've just gotten old and grumpy

Stu---we all do, yeah there are basics that most everyone should know. I think it comes down to what interests people. I like to plant conifers and oaks, but I'm getting the apple bug too.
I'm amazed some of you guys know so much about trees, plants, etc,..
I was surprised that even a guy like Bill Winke knows very little about Apple trees.

I can fully understand why a person wouldn't know a whole lot about fruit trees...they are some complicated little bastards. One thing that does really irk me is inaccurate fruit tree information. It takes quite a bit of restraint on my part a few times a week to not log in to DHF to correct some B.S. info on their fruit tree threads.
I imagine a guy who can fix most anything would look at me with the same contempt I have for the folks I've mentioned in this thread.

I just laugh sometimes when I watch these deer guru's set up all these plans, including hinge cutting, Buck beds, doe beds, thermal cover, access trails, pinch points, food plots, mast trees, apple trees......
And the neighbor sits in the middle of his wide open pasture and shoots just as many big bucks.....
I have seen it, I have lived it! LOL

If they have never owned land they would have no reason to know anything about hinge cutting or planting food plots. I had never heard of hinge cutting until my father bought some land last year and I started searching on the internet. Best I can tell to do the basics well still takes some knowledge. That is why I am on here absorbing anything I can. What is annoying is most aren't willing to spend even a few hours searching. They just ask the same question as someone did yesterday and the day before.

The DHF guys don't understand what may work for plots and trees in Virginia won't work in Minnesota due to different soils, cold and heat differences , winter snow and summer rain, etc. Nobody questions anything so if somebody says something that's wrong they all treat it as gospel.

This is the very reason I don't post a lot of answers over there. I do a lot of habitat and food plot things but just because something works for me doesn't mean it will for someone else. Would hate to give bad advice, and there are plenty of people out there that know a lot more than I do about this stuff anyway. They are the one's to listen to.

I belong to a few facebook pages that are generally "deer habitat" related. The number of people out there who don't even know what a hinge cut is amazes me on a pretty much daily basis. The number of "what deer mineral do I use" or "what do I plant, and when do I plant it? threads daily is unreal. I thought (foolishly) that most folks who were interested in this shit had a grasp on the basics. I was unbelievably wrong. I have a much better understanding of how and why guys like Brauker, Sturgis, Bartylla, LaPratt, Ehrlinger, and many others make a really lucrative living. I wish I was better at self-promotion I get that the sense that even though your straight forward Stu, your not a BS'r. I was at a meeting the local QDMA chapter put on one time in my small home town. Brauker was there, that day on I hated the QDMA. I'd like to think your nothing like that breed of pompess wind bag.

I think back to 2011 I was that guy, I planted brassica on a beach sand laden platform with a PH of 4.5 because folks on TV grew it easy peasy......in Iowa. Everyone has to start somewhere, I never had a place to call my own to play with before then. Never planted a tomato let alone a food plot. Take it easy on them Stu, theres a few good ones amongst all the idiots.

I've never met Brauker, but sure have exchanged thoughts with him on the interwebs. If I did at all resemble him in "real life" I'd be really, really disappointed in myself.

You always learn more researching yourself rather than asking but I admit some habitat things don't interest me at all so I sometimes fall into ask first mode. I know apples trees are a great tool but I can't get into to reading about them. I don't even know what 1st leaf, 2nd leaf, blah blah blah is. I didn't either a few years ago, now.................... not so much.

And the neighbor sits in the middle of his wide open pasture and shoots just as many big bucks..... I have seen it, I have lived it! LOL That exact scenario played out in IA about 3 years ago to me. I had a real nice buck on camera that was living on my farm. We had found his sheds for two years, we knew exactly where he was bedding. I saw him at 40 yards while bow hunting, he was a giant. I thought it was going to be "my" big buck. In the fall of 2014 the buck chased a doe onto the neighboring farm to the north with very little cover (mostly alfalfa) and a high school kid was sitting with his friend in a ground blind. The kid took a running shot a 45 yards and hit the buck in the paunch area. They tracked it and believe it not, had to jump on it and knife it to kill the buck....I was literally listening to this story with my mouth open saying...no way. My neighbor text me the harvest photo of the deer and said do you recognize this buck, then proceeded to tell me the story. Simply unreal, but I guess the kid became a local legend of deer hunting. Good for him!!
