Good to hear from you stu I also ordered b118 and antonovka rootstock from them, hopefully they do ok when they arrive. Have you had grafting survival issues in the past when the rootstock was leafed out?No, I haven't. I also haven't bench grafted all that many leafed out rootstocks. It would seem to me to be pretty much like top working. When topworking, a grafter should wait until the rootstock/tree has leafed out. I think apples and pears are quite forgiving. Get the cambiums matched up and more often than not they'll take. Having dormant scions is the most important part of the process Maybe my problem with top working has been doing it before they leaf out? I was blaming late frosts for killing scion.

The old adage is to topwork when the leaves are the size of a squirrel's ear. That's about how big the leaves are on my rootstocks that have leafed out. I think up here a guy would be better off topworking in late May than in late April.

I threw out half of it, I've seen better size sweet crabs from my local co-op exchange..

Yeah Stu my rootstock was from Burnt Ridge, I've used them a bunch for stock. Never had this happen before. Bought 18 B118s and 18 Antonovka's.
Antonovka's didn't have much for finger roots worried a bit about those survival rates. Thought my experience with Antonovka in transplanting 2-3 year old grafts even they didn't have much for finger roots, that stock tended to get large caliper fibrous roots rather than small trailings.

That sucks about the small b118s. I guess I got lucky. I did also order 5 of their 3-5' Antonovka rootstocks that they had on sale late Fall/early winter. They were huge, but some did have the lack of small roots you mentioned. My ussurian pear rootstocks were the smallest, but even those were right around 1/4"

Not worth your time to plant the root stock and let it grow for a year or two?

Not worth your time to plant the root stock and let it grow for a year or two? Nah I have 20 or so of them in my nursery from year prior. I have fruit trees coming out my ears.

Anyone know if Burnt Ridge does catalogs anymore or everything online? I haven't received a 2021 catalog yet. If I recall correctly, theirs doesn't usually show up until towards Christmas though
