Dad was killing deer with a recurve back in the 70s. He killed a Muley and antelope with a borrowed rifle about 30-40 years ago. I don’t think he has ever killed a whitetail with a gun. Maybe one with a muzzle loader.
In Wyoming he could go back next month and rifle hunt on the same tag. Our buddy now lives in Colorado and plans to go back for rifle. I’m out of vacation so I can’t go. Dad isn’t interested.
I’m surprised he has used a crossbow for the last 8-10 years. Rifle hunting isn’t in his dna.

Well, second year in a row I thought I would be hunting Colorado for Mule deer and point creep got me again. This year I had 11 points trying to get into unit 66 and the unit went from 11-12 to draw a tag.
Hard to plan a western hunt with this point creep. I think the western states have a large problem on their hands as allot of people are getting turned off by having to invest so much time and effort to go hunting. Many guys have 20+ points and still can't get the hunts they had originally planned.
If you want to hunt the better units at the better times of the year you have to have allot of points to get into those units.
Go Brandon!!

I ended up getting my first mule deer tag for CO but for a 1-2 pt unit. My dad will be chasing elk and my buddy picked up a bear and Mule deer tag was well.

Decades back I was up to 5 or 6 points for a quality mule deer hunt in Colorado and the points needed kept increasing. I gave up and now just hunt Minnesota.

I enjoy the western hunts far more than whitetail. I like the adventure and the backcountry hunting. The point system is a scam to fund the western states wildlife offices. When most of the hunting is federal land and a resident can buy a license for $35 and a non resident has to pay $400 to $1000+ its a scam.

We would set up an army tent and also have 1 or 2 spike camps. With age, and back pain nearly every night, I realize those hunts are probably over for me.

Agree on the do it yourself hunts, they are allot of work and you need some younger guys to make it work. Allot depends on your expectations, if you want to get out west and hunt with family and friends and are less concerned about the type of animal you want there are lots of places to hunt. If you are looking to hunt better quality animals you need to either know someone or hunt with a quality guide.

I will no longer apply for points.
