Chokecherries have begun blossoming. Pretty crazy year, my apples are usually done blossoming by now (except Court Pendu Plat anyway) as are most all ornamental crabs. This area is about at full bloom with crabs and apples now. Hawthorns usually start blooming Memorial Day, and this year they are barely at tight cluster. Chokecherries seem to be on schedule though.
I am noticing quite a bit of winter damage on apples. One Haralson down the road a ways that has to be 20+ years old looks like it lost a large limb on the north side.
If springs like this are the "new normal"...I'm not going to be a fan

Stu or others. I did most of my grafting with black electricians tape and some with plain old rubber bands. How long do I wait to slit the tape or bands? July 1?

July should be fine. You could probably wait until fall or next spring if you wanted. Better to be sure they're not going to girdle though

Art, did you wrap the black tape directly to the bark?? I’ve seen people damage the young bark when removing it. You might be better slicing it and letting it wear off.

Some of our creek bottoms are full of blossoming crab apples. I could spend years marking and checking apple size/ taste on these trees. My Big Dog had less crabs last year, but is coming on strong this year.

Yup, I'm seeing more and more trees every year around here. My north neighbors have a couple large trees blooming that I need to get a taste of this fall. I found two more young crabs on my place today. First year they've bloomed. They're about 50' apart, one has white blossoms and one has deep maroon/purplish blossoms. If nothing else, they sure are pretty next to each other.

I don’t have permission to walk this stretch or another.

Art that is an incredible blossom set on that tree. I never stop being surprised on how beautiful an old crab apple looks along a back road. I usually drive by and wonder what the person's plan was that planted. Lots of times around here when you see 1 there are 4 or 5 spaced out around it so you know someone did something at some point.

Anybody else with a Golden Hornet? Bloom time? Mine is approaching full bloom, I grafted it because it was supposed to be in the same bloom period as Court Pendu Plat. It is not (at least here).
