Ruffed grouse drumming is up 48% in northern WI this spring. If the grouse can find a dry spot to start a nest we should have some good hunting this fall.

After last few seasons sucking ass I pretty much gave up on Grouse. I might have to go bust some brush this fall on public and see what is out there.

Sure they are. And roadside counts of deer suggest MN is at an all Time population high.

Couple years back, MN said we had about the highest grouse population ever in the early summer. When they sent out 130+ hunters around Grand Rapids in the fall, I think they came back with less than ten birds, and it was said to be the worst anyone had ever seen.

There are no grouse left, probably no reason for anyone to even bother walking a logging road this fall! I think the drumming surveys are better than nothing, but having a lot of surviving adults in the spring doesn't necessarily guarantee a banner fall hunt since a wet, cold nesting period can screw up the nests. This spring has been pretty wet and cold, so the hunting might not be too great unless the birds can re-nest and pull off a successful hatch.

The grouse hatch I saw Had at least five snacks hatch out. There were no match for the T-rexish eastern strain of wild turkey.
The term gobbler is really more about how fast an adult tom can finish a clutch of grouse than the noise he makes.
If grouse were stronger turkeys would have teeth.
