We had a great crop of Dwarf Chinkapin Oak seedlings this year. These are collected from a stand that was planted roughly 20 years ago and has been producing really well for the last 12 years. Seedlings were sown this spring and are roughly 12"-18" tall. All are grown RootMaker containers to produce one of the best root systems out there. We can ship to any state from Nebraska East. DCO is a great habitat plant. Acorns are sought after by deer, turkey, squirrels, and more. Fast growing and produce acorns after just a few years of age. His Shrubs are spendy, $28 per small pot. I purchased some from the Nebraska Arboretum and I think I paid $7 per plant. The arboretum plants were smaller than those above but $28 is steep.

Will those trees grow in zones 3 and 4? Attached is the plant native range from the USDA-NRCS plant database. The native stand from this group was located in Southeast Nebraska. I have planted in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri and things have done well. I would think they would do alright in your area, they are a tough little plant!

Will those trees grow in zones 3 and 4? I bought into the hype over at the Q years ago and tried growing them. I wanted diversity. I’ve got one protected one left that’s stayed at around 4’ for the past 5-6 years. It doesn’t dieback but, doesn’t grow any more either. I’d stick with natives or try some swamp white oaks.

every time I try growing something questionable zone-wise it ends up biting me in the butt in a tough winter
I want fruit and nut trees somebody's grandma has growing near Ely.

Now’s the time to take a drive out there and look for any loaded apple trees beside the roads. Then make a trip back in February or March.

Never mind, I can't find a single nut on my native DCO's.
