Some of you guys that have been following the Todd plot know I'm working on alleviating some compaction and thin top soil in the Todd plot. It's currently planted to fall seeded rye and ready to come roaring out as soon as spring gets here. I've got an extra bucket of urea left from last fall that I forgot to use. For max bio mass, should I fertilize the rye right away at green up, or wait a while?
I don't want to go bonkers with nitrogen, but maybe a 50lb/ac boost to ensure I get a good amount of root tillering and a nice mat of duff to chop up and lay onto a fall brassica seeding.

I would wait just a couple weeks for it to "get it's legs under itself" and then hit it. This would also alleviate the chances for you to hit a really cold snap that would drop the growth down to nothing while the N sits there.
Nothing really scientific about that post, just personal opinion.

If you are doing the rye to help alleviate compaction I would save the urea for your fall planting. By not adding the urea I would think the rye would send it's root system deeper to find the available nitrogen vs if you spread it on top it might promote a shallow root system.

Is the bucket sealed? If the urea has been exposed to air it is no good.

It's kinda sealed. It's sitting in the office at work with a lid that almost snaps shut.
