A good way to add more small game hunters is to add a 4 day deer gun season over the most popular 4 day small game weekend !!🤷🏻♂️

A friend of mine has 30 acres and he sent me a text, saying his neighbors were target shooting at prime time last night in preparation for youth hunt on the 10 acres next to him. His exact response was "this chaps my ass"!

He's probably lucky they were target shooting the night before youth opener, scare everything away and onto his land where hopefully it will be a sanctuary all weekend.

His exact response was "this chaps my ass"! I heard a fair amount of shooting last night as well. I hope they were only target shooting and not having an early start to the season. It really kind of sucks in this state. Firearm hunters usually get the rut (I am thankful for the later start this season), and now "youth" hunters get to screw up the pre-rut statewide. I had a little 5 pointer chasing does at 6 last night. I hope these 4 days doesn't cause a nocturnal shift.

Are you bowhunting? or did you see the deer when you were out and about?

See any studs around Stu? My BIL has some nice bucks on his 40 west of Long Prairie. Not with my own eyes, no. There's at least one huge bodied 10 point here that I'd shoot if given the chance. There may be two, but I'd need a few more pics to be sure. There's an 8 that may go 120, he'd be tempting but I think I would pass. I had pics of a different 10 point this summer that would probably also be in that 120-125+ range that would be tempting, but I haven't got a pic of him since August. No shit yer pants bucks, but some decent ones.

At least one youth hunter, if not two on our section. I heard shots.

It looks like youth hunters have done pretty well in our area.
How many deer do you predict will be taken over these four days? I will estimate 2/3 of the annual bow kill.
Will it result in a higher annual deer kill or just shift harvest to earlier in the season?
I feel it will make Deer more nocturnal and move them into the standing cornfields in our area.
Our sixth grade nephew shot his first buck.

The weather during the gun season and the status of crop harvest will dictate how the overall kill will look. At this time, I saw on the news that harvest statewide is 2 weeks behind schedule, and I would have to think its going to be delayed much longer with wet fields.
Is there a seperate license for this youth hunt, so the DNR knows how many participated?

I just saw that.... How the hell is the DNR going to know what the participation rate is for this early season hunt? What a bunch of hooligans. It would seem to be some pretty important data to know how many are afield for this specific hunt and figure out success rates and hunter densities in the various zones.
