Bobcat/Mulcher for me . I know it won’t kill it all . But I’ll try to keep up with it somewhat!

Two invasives, buckthorn and red cedar. I would never plant the buckthorn but am ok with it being cover in and around the cedars.

Seen that happen. The places where I have dropped red cedar have filled in with buckthorn so I have pretty much stopped cutting the cedars in the woods. Some of the areas where I have dropped popple have filled in with young popple, one area has a lot of buckthorn.

Buckthorn is super invasive.....but do the buds have decent nutrition for deer ? It's ugly stuff....I do not want it.....but I dont think it's all "bad" for deer.

What irks me the most about buckthorn is the monoculture it creates. I suppose a little buckthorn isn't a terrible thing, but a little buckthorn turns into a metric shitton of buckthorn in a hurry.

When you spray the buckthorn is it necessary to get chemical completely around the stem or will it work to hit most of it from one side.

When you spray the buckthorn is it necessary for o to get chemical completely around the stem or will it work to hit most of it from one side. I've had excellent results spraying only one side on stuff up to 2" diameter or so. Bigger than that I usually try to go all the way around. edited to add...the last couple falls/winters I've sprayed some 4-6" diameter ironwood and black ash trees. I've noticed that some of those trees will leaf out and appear to be just fine for much of the following summer...but towards the end of the summer or early fall they'll begin to decline. Most are dead as a doornail the second spring.

I agree completely- little stuff dies with one side, but anything over 2” I try to spray all around.
I’ve had some big buckthorns survive spraying only one side. The sprayed side died, but the other side sent up new growth.

Well, I may be in your camp in a few years Art. I went out with the ATV today to pack trails all the way around and to wander through some areas on foot that no feet have been on for at least 6-7 years. Guess what I found? More stragglers and "clumps" of buckthorn I had flagging tape with me, so I flagged it all. I'll get it sprayed at some point. I went through areas where I've planted 100s of evergreens. Not much to show for those efforts. There are isolated spots where the deer/bunnies have left the evergreens alone, but not many. Rather disappointing for sure. I am getting some really nice aspen re-gen in spots though, so that's a good thing. I've got a few spots that would be helpful to have another set of eyes look at, but the whole "land tour" deal is about done and over with I think. No new wild crabs/apples found today. I looked back at this thread to see when the snow got too deep to get the atv through the woods this winter. I didn't realize it was early December. I got the buckthorn sprayed today that I had flagged back in December. Of course, once I got what I had flagged sprayed I pushed further into my old hinged areas that are full of prickly ash....and found some clumps of buckthorn. I got those sprayed too. I'm sure there are more patches out there that I've missed, but I'm definitely winning the war (for now).

Used up the last of the diesel/Crossbow I had in the sprayer today. Hit some buckthorn stragglers I found last week and a bunch of prickly ash that was creeping in along my trails. Feels good to wrap up that little piece of habitat management...

Feels good to wrap up that little piece of habitat management... I was told by one of the foresters there was some buckthorn on my new property. I want to get a handle on what it is and attack it this year so it doesn’t go wild when I log and get more sunlight. I believe he will be including that info in the timber survey follow up.
