Dads been at the farm the last few days pulling buckthorn with the utv. Spraying would cover more tonnage quicker, but what the hell. Its something Pulling is more fun 😆, and knowing your dad, he's working that Yamaha to death. God i wish i knew the hours and miles on that thing! Looks like it shoulda been in the scrap yard 10 years ago, but will not die. He does a great job on maintenance and upkeep on it. NOTTTTTTTT

Went thru another 1.5 gallons of mix today. Had to get out for a bit before the house is full of people. Found two 9-10' wild crabs in some thick stuff. More topworking targets

Only went through a gallon or so today, but I covered a bunch of ground. While I was out, I made sure to check on some top worked wild crabs from this spring. I had forgotten what varieties they were, and was hoping I could still read/find the labels. I did so on all but one. FWIW...it seems writing the variety on the trunk with a Sharpie in a few spots will last through at least one growing season if it's not in full sun. Now, I was finally smart enough to write down on my map what those varieties are. Now to see if they survive winters...

2 full gallons of mix in/around ground zero today. The old hinges and mature aspens I dropped and let lay made for a really great buckthorn "nursery" as it's ridiculously thick and tough to access. There were several large buckthorns (like 6-7" diameter trunks) in the area when I made the mess, and I didn't kill them first. Big mistake. I got into areas today that I haven't been in since I made the mess 7-8 years ago or so.

I’m taking the day off tomorrow to show my dad the new place and to do a little work out there. Maybe we will try to find a rooster too if we have time. I haven’t walked one section of the new place yet, but on the aerial photo it looks like a solid bedding area.
I’m hoping to expand that area by dropping a bunch of trees all over that area. I have a ton of Siberian elm that choke out the sun, so they will go first.
This area will be had to get to once we get much snow, so I need ti move fast and get as much done in this area as I can.

Man, amazing the attacks you have made and still keep reporting infestations.

Man, amazing the attacks you have made and still keep reporting infestations. I'm going to say I've killed (counting this year's spraying) 95% or more of the buckthorn on this place. Keep in mind...it's an ongoing war. The amount of sprouts under dead female trees/bushes is pretty incredible. If you don't hit those sprouts the year they germinate, they'll be 2-4' in a year or two (if deer don't browse them). My goal is to have zero buckthorn on this property. Will I ever get there? I don't know. I do believe I can get to the point where there's zero berry producing buckthorn. I told my wife tonight that if I ever get the stuff to the point where I only need to spend an hour or two spraying, I'm not sure what I'll do with all the "extra" time.

Not sure I want to deal with the liabilities involved. I think I may choose to spend the extra time somewhere warmer instead

Son of a..... Art, Are you busy this winter?? I have most days scheduled with appointments this winter. These fish need counciling! I wonder if I could bill Walz for my medical advice on fish! i don’t worry much about buckthorn except one area on the edge of our yard. I like the cover it creates. The thicker the better. I also do not want to spend the rest of my days on a hopeless cause. just my choice and it is not the right choice for everyone. If buckthorn is just getting started, battle it. I also do not want a lot of exposure to the chemicals. I have had enough of that during life.
