Saw some new things over the past week. Got me to wondering about bucks locking down does. In your experiences, how far apart does a buck and doe bed from one another when he has her "locked down?"
Saw some very interesting stuff deep in the bush, and it's got me to wondering about doing some deep bush whackin' next year. I think it's gonna take a long day or two to get that kind of spot set up. Don't know if I wanna budget away that much time from the property improvement chores though.

What's on your mind? Buy yourself a second lightweight chainsaw and invite your lady friend up for a weekend of high rev'n excitement. Cuts your work time in half!

Why do you need that much time to set a spot up?
Any large amount of changes can be noticed and used By other hunters.

Grab the rifle and still hunt through the area next weekend. You might learn a lot after hunting it a few times and then you can come up with a game plan.

I might squeeze in a couple days third weekend, I'm just not sure yet. This area is miles and miles of public land. It would be 3/4 mile just to get back there, and probably another 1/4 mile + to get far enough off the trail. If I'm gonna go that far back, I would need some time to get back there and scout it yet this fall and then get a couple climber trees set up with some lanes. It's gonna need lanes.

Do some homework from home with Google earth, look for natural pinch points in travel corridors. Target a couple and then go up and prep an area. You have all winter to get it done.

I walk a 1/2 mile to my stand just so I don't get detected and I am probably twice your age. Go back there with gun in hand with a good cushion, find a spot that gives you some visibility with good deer sign and plunk your butt down on the cushion. I would be willing to bet there have been way more deer killed by hunters sitting on ground than out of a tree stand. How the heck to you think guys killed deer before tree stands came on the scene. Geez Good advice Ben

Bucks are in Lock Down down here right now. Nothing over 125" moving anywhere that we have seen. Been that way for about a day now. Should see a few start moving for opening of rifle on sat. At least the daughter hopes so.

High power rifles, ability to hunt every day, year round season, and 90% fewer hunters?

Your description of that public land makes it sound very promising. Very, very few people are willing to walk that far, so it would be worth hunting it.
Hell, if you get up there in December grab the shotgun and a pocket full of shells and do some grouse hunting/deer scouting. We have found some nice public land deer spots while small game hunting.

I have a spot marked on HuntStand that I found while partridge hunting. I passed the coordinates on to our nephews as I don’t want to shoot a buck back there. I don’t think they have ever gone back there.

Agree, if you save your vacation time, putz with your land on the weekends, and hunt that spot from November 1-6th next year I'd guess you have a shot at decent northwoods buck with your bow. Rifle opener is November 7th next year (my wife's 40th bday;(
