The MN DNR nursery sells larger sized bare root seedlings that are a pretty good deal. I've had excellent luck with them regardless of soil type or weather. The smaller bare root trees they sell are pretty good as well, but their root systems are smaller and they aren't quite as strong. I would do 25-50 bare root, but just not into more than that. I am also looking at bigger plugs and cage each one.

Hate to see you do extra work but I'd get the biggest bare root trees you can and plant them. Seems like the bigger the tree I plant, the better off it does. Smaller trees need a lot more attention the first few years and seem to die off a lot easier. Unfortunately Tapatalk is only letting me like this post once, but your experience has mirrored mine.

Spruce Spruce Cedar Oak (Red and Swamp Bur) Sand Cherry
Moved my screen back 200 yds off road, on a hill along fence ... same purpose . This tree planting is expensive!

I think I had 100% survival on my red cedar despite the drought...rough 50% on the Black Hills Spruce.

I planted a small area with 5 rows to screen off the road a bit and add a little cover to a grassy area.
Plum, Spruce, Spruce, Pine, & last row is mix of oak . Roughly 30 trees. It’s far enough off the gravel road to be safe. This rain should give it an ideal start !
