How long are muzzleloader powder pellets and primers good for? I haven't hunted in several years, but I'm thinking about giving it a try again. The powder is stored in my basement, although I could throw them in my gun safe that has a dryer in it.

I have loose powder that is probably about 15 years old. I bought it when Gander Mountain switched from the little store format to the large store format....bought a lot of black powder stuff when the little Brookfield store shut down..and i had not lived in the Milwaukee area for a long time.

The only misfires I’ve ever had were with pyrodex pellets. It happened 3 times. Once with a large bear in the morning and a nice buck in the afternoon. The next year a heavy palmated buck. A year apart using new pellets each time. I switched back to pyrodex powder and have never had a problem. Same thing happened to my brother as well. I know people have good luck with pellets but, I’ll never use them again.

BH209 - It's like shooting gold du$t. But, it's clean and consistent.
But, to answer your question. I stored a load of pellets for about 5 years in a closet in my basement. They worked just like they were new.

Only time I have ever had any issue was my own damn fault..... Try a few loads to get back into the swing of things before you hunt and see if you have any issues....if primers show any sign of corrosion I would not use them and the powder - as long as it is dry should be fine as well. With the new in-line models pulling a load is far easier and safer in my opinion.

I bought new pellets but kept the primers. Seven shots on range were fine.

This is good info. I'm not an avid muzzleloader hunter and have only killed one deer with the weapon. My neighbor saw a bunch of deer in my standing beans last night so I think I might as well give it a try, but I'd prefer not to have to buy all powder and primers.
