Starting this Thursday and going thru Sunday is a statewide doe hunt in Wisconsin. I know a lot of you guys don't shoot does . The 1st day I bow hunted in October I had 35 antlerless and 4 bucks in one of my 3 acres plot. My plots got cleaned up way faster than they have ever before. I am also starting to see a browse line on one side of the plot. If you were me , how many does would you shoot ? I was thinking 3 or 4 adult does would help. More less, what do you think?

Conventional data says kill 1/3 to maintain current levels. Not saying that is your answer but its a starting point.
Bartylla would say if they are browsing twigs the size of pencil kill more, and if they are not kill fewer.

If you have a browse line and they are cleaning you out before gun season is over I would shoot some does. When the hunting was the best for bucks were you seeing fewer does? Ideally you could knock the does back to that number.
i prefer lots of deer if given the choice though, so i wouldn't go too crazy.

Damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

I saw mature bucks last year, this year almost all the bucks I saw in person were 1 and 2 years old. We only shot one doe last year. This year there were 5 or 6 year and half old does without fawns plus a bunch of does with 2 fawns. One doe even had triplets. I like seeing lots of deer too but with this many it might be detrimental to me seeing much rut activity.

It doesn't sound like you are in danger of running out of deer, so you should put a few does in the freezer.

When I hunted on Thanksgiving day there was still some food left but not a lot. Usually lasts into January. As far as running out of deer I don't think that will happen as there is a square mile section across road from me that no one hunts for the last 3 years since a Ginseng farmer bought it. Before that there were about 17 people that hunted it. I think this might be part of the higher doe numbers as the deer cross back and forth.

Do you see any natural mortality inside the fence? 5 to 10% mortality. Working toward a cwd resistant herd. I will Suggest that state agency numbers on capacity are fairy dust.

I have been seeing a doe with twins on our farm during muzzleloader season, have a doe tag in my pocket, and am reluctant to shoot her.
At first, I thought there were several does with twins, but I think it is the same doe. She gets a pass and so has the same little buck.
Different situation I know.

Don’t see many does around me, so I can’t justify killing one.
If I were seeing that many does, I would start crushing them. Overbrowsing selects for the junk plants and can do serious damage quickly.

The only thing I can add for advice is be careful late season shooting large does because some bucks shed early. I had a photo last December 10 of a buck that had shed his left antler.
