I've got a clover/chicory plot where the pocket gophers moved in last fall. Come spring, I'll poison and trap the little bastards. I was pissed at the mounds since they'll make it impossible to mow with my BillyGoat...but then I got to thinking I could use those mounds for planting pumpkin seeds. Anybody ever do this?

I've never done that with pumpkins, but it's a good idea. When planting acorns and plums I always plant some in every gopher mound I find. Stuff grows good in that loose dirt.

Tangent.
I once saw one of those big ant hills planted with oats and it was attracting deer. This was up in the north country.
I guess it started as someone using oats and molasses as bear bait. That six foot area allowed a guy to harvest a doe with the bow.

I tansplanted red cedars this summer into gopher mounds. Sure beat trying to cut into sod that was like trying to dig in concrete. Worked very good

Every late winter/early spring I walk through my wild flower plot and throw handfuls of russell lupine seeds on the gopher mounds. Works great, the lupines expand annually

Planting stuff in the mounds would prevent me from getting drunk and angrily stomping around the yard to squash the little bastards. Edit - I do this with mole hills. I don't think I have gophers yet.

Have we learned nothing from Petuna? Mmmm. Petuna.

Today I decided to say to hell with the pumpkin/gopher mound idea. Instead I took the garden rake and smoothed out all the mounds. That'll make it easy to tell if there's any new activity, and also much easier to mow the plot come summer. I may still plant some pumpkins somewhere else.

I did it with corn last year. Did not keep tabs on how many mounds I did But there was noticeable corn.
