Well, I had pocket gophers move into the houseplot last fall. There are mounds all over out there. Once the frost comes out, I'll get on top of them with poison and traps...but I've decided to try growing pumpkins in at least a few of the mounds. I ordered some CT field pumpkin seed the other day, should be here next week. How important is weed control where the vines grow? I've had volunteer squash and pumpkins grow from our compost pile before. I did nothing other than mow around the vines and they produced plenty of fruit.

The pumpkin vines will have no issues competing with weeds, especially with low growing weeds like clover or grass. The outside rows of my pumpkin patch send huge vines into the adjacent weeds and there are always a bunch of pumpkins hiding in the tall weeds. I don't bother weeding around those vines at all and they do great.
The CT field pumpkins are really good for Halloween pumpkins and deer. We usually pull the seeds out of a few of the larger pumpkins and dry them for planting the following year.

We planted CT field last year. They ran into the grass no problem.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm hoping the pumpkins will use up some of the accumulated N from the clover plot. I just hope the deer allow the vines to get established enough to bloom and set fruit.

They didn’t seem to touch ours.

They don't mess with our vines either.
