Did a solo duck hunt in a beaver swamp this week. The ducks were slow but I left an old .410 in the truck. After changing out of my waders, I took a 1 hour walk and jumped 4 rabbits. Killed one missed 1 and the other 2 didn’t give me a shot. The .410 was purchased used by my grandpa when dad was about 5. Dad killed his first squirrels and rabbits with it. I did too. My daughter killed her first rabbit with it last year. I’m guessing the last time I took a walk jump shooting rabbits with that gun was 35 years ago when I was 11 or so. I upgraded to a pump gun when I was 12-13.

I really enjoy rabbit hunting like that. It sounds like the old gun still can get the job done.
How are you going to cook the rabbit?

Not sure on cooking. Sichuan rabbit is really good so I’ll probably do that. It would be a better family meal if I add another rabbit to the pot.
I should get a chance to hunt with my cousin and his beagles this year. So getting a few more shouldn’t be a problem.

I just pull the hide back and fillet the meat off the backstraps and hind legs. No need to gut them that way. You can cut off the front legs too if you want. Not as much meat there though.

Love me an old fashioned cottontail stew and biscuts. Campfire classic

We killed a bunch of rabbits last year. I took all of the front legs and made rabbit buffalo wings. Cooked the backstops and back legs other ways.
No way I throw away the front legs.

Nice work Reagan. I put on a lot of miles in high school rabbit hunting snowshoes with our beagles. Cottontail are rare up here but we do see them occasionally.
