The Natural Resource Board put a bunch of advisory questions on this spring's Conservation Congress hearings.
19 day gun season
Bring Earn a buck back
Crossbow month of October and then after gun season
Close hunting down 2 or 5 days before gun season.
Can't hunt with crossbow or archery buck tag during gun season
Eliminate December antlerless hunt
Eliminate deer zones

How long is your gun season now?
They may have a tough time getting crossbow inclusion slimmed down.

Isn't the NRB a citizen board, or has the state gotten their people planted on it?

Deer kill was down this year so the NRB does a knee jerk reaction. Maybe back off on killing the does in some areas.

As a gun hunter who does not do any form of archery i'm on board.
Not really, but i would love an early primative black powder season... no scopes, no sabots, no inline rifles.

I like the idea of closing down the season for 2 days before the gun opener and trimming back the crossbow season. In our WI area there is no shortage of deer hunters, just a shortage of deer. I think their 2 million deer estimate was way off since the northern WI deer numbers seem to be much lower than they say they are. I don't think their deer population formula is accurate in areas with lots of predators.
Increasing the gun season from 10 to 19 days doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

Let’s face the truth. WI and now MN are using the CWD scare to do what they’ve always wanted to do... significantly lower deer numbers. They couldn’t care less about us habitat and deer managers.
WI’s angle has been to increase weapon range and increase season lengths. They made rifles available just about everywhere now. My home county used to be shotgun before CWD. The numbers have stayed pretty consistent since earn-a-buck was removed. After a few years of earn a buck in a row our numbers were LOW. I will say that the quality of bucks has went down significantly though. Three year old deer are just too big to pass for most hunters and with rifles now, they have a hard time slipping through the cracks. It’s rare to have a buck on camera that gets me fired up. We used to have one or two in that class every year. Now I’m lucky to have a fully mature buck with a decent rack to hunt every 5 years or so. This year, we gave up hunting that area (after 20 some years) in hopes of a greener pasture somewhere else.
WI has also added crossguns. So far this year, crossguns have harvested 51,000 deer statewide vs 41,000 with vertical bows. This trend will probably continue. Crossguns with scopes are more accurate and have a longer range than vertical bows when in the hands of an average hunter.
Many Southern Farmland zones have also added gun antlerless only holiday hunts and now some have extended either sex archery until Jan 31st. They will do anything to kill a couple hundred extra deer per zone. The average hunters eat up this opportunity. The habitat and deer managers hate it. It makes the habitat season pretty short. Today, we can finally go outside and use our property without worrying about a neighbor sitting on the fence.

Adding 10 days to the gun season would be idiotic.
