I threw this up on Iowawhitetail as well, curious as to the survival of your say top 5 or top 10 bucks. How many on average survive to the next season? With trail cam or visual sightings, I'd be curious to compare.

Normally I'm lucky if I have proof that 1 of the top 5 bucks survived the season.

I lose 15% to who knows what and we kill 30% of the males each year.
That’s 25 to 65%. And we don’t shoot 1.5 year old bucks.

In MN I would venture to say that 1 to 2 of the top 10 survive. In Iowa the odds are much better more like 5 out of 10.

At my dad's place it's rare to see a buck 2 years in a row.
At my place we tend to have 1 out of 3 disappear each year.
20 miles apart but very different dynamics.

For me as well, one hour north and I see better over survival in Otter Tail County. It helps that I border a big tamarack swamp. Plenty of hunters, but they cannot access the area near me due to terrain.

You guys are discussing a million dollar idea. Rec land is bought and sold 90% on this topic. Create the database and you have gold.
Count me in.

Well, we are at 0% so far. Farm next to my parents, hardly a deer pic since gun season. No 2019 shooters on cam so far.
our farm, not a single pic of a buck over 1.5 since gun season.
Looking promising for next year.

We don't have a top ten because we don't even have ten bucks. We did see three 2.5 or older bucks before deer season and have see one on camera since. Most of the yearlings seem to have made in through.

I'd say 50% of the ones we track make it.

I had 5 studs survive the 2018 season only to have 2 return for the 2019 season. Don't know if the other 3 died over winter due to predators, winter severity or car kill. Maybe they just chose another place to hang out this past season or some of the people in area are keeping their kills top secret. As the bucks around my area mature they some times go missing for a year or 2 only to re-appear later.

I suspect they go to less pressured and more secluded areas to live the last years of their lives. I think having more than 2 or 3 three year old's on the place makes it too socially crowded for the 5+ year olds. I've wondered what would happen if I started to shoot more of the "nice" ones and made room for the oldest ones to feel comfortable.

Amazing that certain bucks are never accounted for? I’ve seen 2 real big ones in MN, that I never saw in a harvest photo or nothing. These were bucks that would have been bragged about. One was probably 180 inches. Did he die somewhere and no one found the rack... possibly poached??

Each year we usually have 4-5 bucks that are 3.5-4.5 yrs old but seems like only one or two stay when they mature. We assume too much pressure and they find ground where there isn’t a mature buck residing. We also have had very nice deer that are never harvested that we never see again. No one shot them since they were Boone and Crockett caliber just never reappear. Seems like as soon as we think we got it figured out the bucks throw us a curve ball.
