My neighbors row planted acres and acres of different oaks and they are going on 10 years old not essentially none has produced yet that I have seen..... That kind of surprises me for Indiana. I have about 10-15 oaks producing some acorns here in MN, same age. I have one planted from an acorn that is pretty darn nice tree already. So much of it is maintenance, there is a real impressive oak tree planting just west of Brooten, MN. If anyone ever drives by there it is on Hwy 55 (north side) all tubed, mowed, and babied. I bet there is 1000 oak trees alive and well, probably dropping a few acorns by now. These I spoke of are not babied. No tubes, no nothing, just row planted in an old corn field. it was a great bedding area for a while. They are planted by a family that owns a sawmill. They are getting to a size where they are starting to shade the ground so I am curious as to when/if they will come thru and removed rows of trees to allow the other to grow. Right now there is no way they will let them all stand. To my knowledge there is no market for oak telephone poles! But for the most part from what I have seen they still are not producing mast. I have found a few on the very outer edge that produce a few but nothing to be all excited about.

Jbird--I bet they planted strictly for timber value?? A stand alone oak with weed mat, tube/cage, really can spread out and likely to produce acorns earlier...from what I have seen.
