I checked our Home Depot last week and it’s gone up to $150 a roll.
I’m going to grab the cages that are on my niece’s trees and have 1/2 a roll. Some trees are large enough to pull cages but, I do think It keeps some bear off them so I hate to pull them.

That's a good price Art. I need to make cages with what the mesh I have now and figure out if I have enough or not.

At the Alex Menards it was $74.74 after the 11% rebate, through today. I don't really consider Menard's rebates as price savings though...I've got a rebate check on the fridge that is well over a year old. I seem to forget the damn thing every time I head that way. If the price in the flyer you posted is an actual price, it's a better deal in my mind.

What size do you cut your cages, how many per roll, do you figure?

What size do you cut your cages, how many per roll, do you figure? I have been using 15 feet or 30 squares if they have the 6 inch gap. I see Stu has them smaller and is working for a taller tree. It works for him. My trees are more exposed to wind and I fear sunscauld damage so I don’t mind lower limbs on the tree. Perhaps some crabs might tend to be more bush like, at least in my area.

I have done the 15.5 ft. Get 3 equal pieces out of a 50 ft roll.

I also do the "30 squares" method. Seems to work good for me!

I used to make 5.5' circles (30 squares). Now I make them a little over 2' (15 squares). I've converted most of my old cages into 2 cages.

I do the 20 square cages. It works fine for me. I do use 1 stake now. I didn’t used to and had a bad wind storm a few years ago flip them off. The deer found the unprotected trees quickly. So I add a stake now. The 20 square approach allows me to get 14-15 cages per roll.

30 years ago, I made some two-three foot cages out of 2x4 welded wire. They worked out well. I purchased this wire from a local hardware store and it was much heavier wire than the welded wire presently at menards.
I would like to get more of that as Deer couldn’t reach through the cage.

I’ve thought about getting a 5’ roll of the 2x4 wire and making 2’ tubes. I think it would be ok but, you’d need to keep clipping the lowest limbs as the tree grows. I think they’d work good on chestnuts and oaks as well if you wanted to give a few preferential treatment.
