30 years ago, I made some two-three foot cages out of 2x4 welded wire. They worked out well. I purchased this wire from a local hardware store and it was much heavier wire than the welded wire presently at menards. I would like to get more of that as Deer couldn’t reach through the cage. I’ve thought about getting a 5’ roll of the 2x4 wire and making 2’ tubes. I think it would be ok but, you’d need to keep clipping the lowest limbs as the tree grows. I think they’d work good on chestnuts and oaks as well if you wanted to give a few preferential treatment. Good deer populations clip out limbs outside of the wire. The bushy growth inside of the wire protects against sunscauld.

They did ok. It might be a good plan for areas where you can’t give trees a lot of care.

Bought a roll today...
Anyone have any experience with the Apple trees at Menards. They have Honeycrisp, State Fair, and a few others.

I was there a little after noon. I haven't bought any apple trees from Menard's, but I have bought a number of ornamental/landscape trees and shrubs. They've all done well.

Ok I might try a State Fair, they also had a Frostbite (I think) ? State Fair is a decent apple for a late summer apple, but they do ripen pretty early. Right around the end of August/very early September. When they're ripe...they drop. Very few hangers and they seem to ripen all at the same time (which is good for a commercial grower).

Damned if I can remember what else they had, but Sweet Sixteen comes to mind?

Damned if I can remember what else they had, but Sweet Sixteen comes to mind? If they had Sweet Sixteen and Frostbite, I'd go for those before State Fair. Nothing wrong with State Fair, it's just an early apple that has to compete with burr oak acorn drop and lots of other soft mast. Not much of a wildlife tree.
