The spring issue of Whitetails (from the MN Deer hunters) had a short note talking about their 'Apple Tree Program' where they'll distribute apple trees for a $20 price each. Not cheap but potted trees at the local nursery aren't cheap either.
Anybody ever participated in getting these trees from the MN deer hunters??
Any idea who to contact in central MN in order to get these trees??

The MDHA trees I've seen have been good sized trees from Bailey's Nursery. $20 is a fair price for the trees I've seen. That said, over my dead body will I give any money to MDHA.
edited to add...over on H-T I saw pics last spring from a MDHA chapter's tree sale day in west central MN (maybe Ottertail?). The bareroot trees were stacked in piles on a sunny day with nothing protecting the roots. If I saw that, I wouldn't be pleased about how my trees were being treated. Pretty clear whoever set that day up knew absolutely nothing about bareroot trees.

I remember seeing that picture of the barefoot apple trees stacked with their roots completely uncovered. there are probably 100 landowners wondering why their apple trees really struggled that first year.

(17) To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat.’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; only through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.
(18) It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
(19) Only by the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”
Genesis 3: 17-19

Our chapter had problems getting the varieties they wanted last year. I also had concerns on how the trees were handled after seeing the picture Stu mentioned.
Last I heard, our chapter did not order any trees for this spring.
I would purchase somewhere else.
Huls just told me he has a couple extra Goodland trees.

Yikes! I didn't realize MDHA was a bad word on this site!!! Just trying to get some apple trees at a decent price -- to create deer habitat.
Doing a quick scan down thru the posts on this topic -- apple trees -- I didn't see any that discussed the best and cheapest spot to get apple trees. That will be one of my posts for the future. I do know that deer love the apple trees I have now, the big ones, with lots of apples, look like a barn yard with all the deer poop under the trees.
Later.

If they don't know they can't do it correctly.
In a past lifetime I was the tree chairman for the Stewartville Pheasants Forever chapter, that territory down there has few wetlands, they realized that they needed to plant habitat, the clubs big habitat project was to give away 100,000 bareroot seedlings every year, spruces, pines, crabapples, etc. Multiple times I showed up with a tree planter to help people plant and they had their trees spread out on the lawn!!! Some people don't know it takes education.

If I were just looking for cheap deer apples I'd buy rootstock. B118 is $2-3 a tree depending upon how many you buy. Let them grow and you'll have apples in 4-5 years. You can always graft over to another variety down the road. Or get some grafted varieties from Small Chunk on here.
For grafted trees, I've had good luck with Cummins in New York, Stark Bros, and Fedco in Maine.

I'll check out Cummins and Fedco. Stark is ok but they're not cheap.
Smallchunk, he sells apple trees??
Thanks for the info.

Dolgo rootstock will produce some deer apples and some bird apples. Where can I get that Dolgo rootstock? Blue Hill had some but he told me he removed them from his website as he had concerns about having the normal shipping. I don’t know if he has removed his other trees from the website or not.

Chief River Nursery usually carries seedling Dolgos as I recall. Lincoln Oakes would be worth a shot too.
