Anyone have experience with Harbin Pears? Worth messing with in zone 3?

Harbin pear is another name for Ussurian pear. They are the most hardy pear rootstock that exists, so ya...they should do fine for you. Lincoln Oakes Nusery used to sell bundles of them (under the name Ussurian I believe) pretty cheaply as I recall.

Burnt Ridge Nursery has had some Ussurian pear rootstocks the last couple years, but it looks like they're sold out now. I bought a few from them last year. I think they were $3.50 each.

I probably wouldn't plant many Ussurian(Harbin) pears just for the fruit. They would offer cross pollination for Ussurian hybrid pear varieties like Ure, Golden Spice, and Early Gold though. I'd plant them with the intention of top working. Those that I planted last year I grafted to Okolo pear (GRIN scions). Very good growth rates with that combo, I'm going to be interested to watch how they grow in the future. Most pears here I've grafted to OHxF 97 and the growth rates are sllllloooowwwww

Good info as always. They still have some available from Anoka SWCD and I might pick up a bundle to experiment with. Diversity is a good thing. Low investment cost at this point. I’ll have to research them a bit for placement.
