Gents I cant buy dirt, fert, lime, etc, my Governors a $&-‘#^’! Idiot. I got 2 persimmons & 2 pawpaws coming mostly for fun but I have some poor dirt in spots.
If i mix ashes from my woodstove & oak leaves you think that’s good enough? I could put a bucket of cow poo with straw in as well but otherwise ummm...🤷♂️

I would avoid wood ash in direct contact with roots. I'd also avoid fresh manure.
Places like Menard's are even closed in MI?

Clsoest Menards is 90 mins & they can’t sell it. All that stuff is roped off just like 10 mins from my house at home depot, lowes, meijer, & walmart. i literally can’t buy it.

I know, it’s flipping nuts but those trees get here today and warms to 50 this saturday, i gotta get ‘em in the ground tomorrow. If you have watersorb or the like I'd definitely dip the roots (I assume they're bareroot) in a thick slurry of the stuff, then add 1/4 cup of the dry powder/crystals to the dirt in each planting hole. Cover the holes with cardboard/newspaper/whatever and a piece of landscaping cloth. Should be fine. If you don't have watersorb, cardboard, newspaper, or landscape cloth....^^^that advice is worthless

I add nothing to the dirt that goes back into the hole. I don't want to create a barrier for the roots to circle around in. I want roots spreading out into the original soil as the tree grows and not balling up in the nice dirt that I filled the hole in with. Supplements come later and always at the drip line towards the outside of the root zone... something to entice the roots to spread.
I'm not sure any of that is proven with studies, but it makes since to me and I've read many articles saying the same. Take it for what it's worth.

I'd hoog it. Unless those oak leaves are composted, I'd stay away from them. Different leaves fresh off the tree can kick of suppressive chemicals that may slow down your trees. I'm not sure on oak, but the general idea is to compost leaves before you use them as an amendment. Even from fall to spring may mitigate much of that effect, but you've got other options. I like the idea of adding carbon, but I'd rather do it with larger chunks (tennis ball vs sawdust) of wood to lessen the surface area of said carbon, and lengthen the life of it. If you can find a few chunks of wood that've been dead a year, and then a combo of soft and hard, I'd whack them into fist sized chunks and mix them into your hole. A few scoops of powdered (rotten) stump might be a good addition as well. Go easy on the wood ashes.

I have pretty crappy sandy soil in about 1/2 of my property and I plant my trees directly into that soil. I spread lots of oak leaves and grass clippings around my apple trees for mulch that builds the soil up from the top down as it decomposes. If I have cardboard or drywall I want to get rid of I put it down on the ground before I spread the leaves. I add ash and/or lime on top of the leaves to assist with decomposition. The cardboard and leaves also help retain moisture. This plan has worked really well for me, but you just need to make sure that you use window screen on the trunks so the mice don't eat your young trees.

BV,
I was very proud of you Michiganers that went to the cities today to voice your anger.
Any wood chip piles around you? Among the roadsides , dump/landfill that may have compost or chips, any tree guys that might have chips? Ideally at least a year old.

I’ve decided i’ll dig some black dirt outta the swampy areas and use ok leaves to mix with the dirt thats there.
Think I should use my tree tubes I have or should I just fence these in.
I think pawpaws & persimmons just kinda do their own thing right?

Planted 3 Meader Persimmons, 2 early Golden Persimmons, 2 PA Golden paw paw, & 1 davis paw paw from @39thparallel today. Nice stock, however, since I live in Michigan and my governor...🤦♂️
I can’t buy dirt, lime, fert, etc... So I used the dirt there, watersorb (already had), & tree tubes.
Forgot to snap a pic, I dub this the covid planting.
All on the same property as my orchard but a diff section.
