I think you could probably bushhog/mow ROD any time of the year, but doing it while dormant is probably best practice.

About a third of the cuttings have leafed out so far

There’s been no rain this spring. Low ground comes in handy some times. Didn’t stand around to try to gauge success rates. Will do that when I get home and I can see a blown up version.

This really slowed down. I didn’t stop to count or pull weeds, but I had expected more. Maybe they’re busy putting down roots. Once I upload the pics, I can study it a little better on a larger screen.

I did something similar but with bare root silky dogwood. I didn't have a ton of luck with ROD or silky cuttings. Some, but not great. I planted 10 or 25 or w/e I ordered silky's from MDC years ago and just put a 3 or 4 ft welded wire fence around them. 10-12' diameter or so. It protected them enough from the deer to get them established. I'll have to get a pic of it next time I'm in the river bottoms.

It looks like I've got a good take rate so far, but a lot of them are starting to turn, drop leaves, or just outright die. It isn't the most ideal spot for them, it was the most ideal spot for me. I think had then been 2-3 feet closer to my water line they'd be doing better.

Super cage update. I bet had I put these in a wet spot, they’d be doing better. Still, plenty alive in there.

One thing I wish I'd had done was bury all my stems in a single hole. I had a fist full of stuff that didn't have great nodes on them and I just pitched them. There's always next year.

Went and check on one of the super cutting cages I put out this spring. I have growth on about a third of the cuttings, but the rooted transplants are doing really well.

I put another one together last weekend. This one maybe has 50 cuttings in it. I held up at 1 to see how this goes. I suspect the big one I did last year lost some more. This one is site-matched better than The one from LY. I also splurged on rooting hormone. I left a little more top to these cuttings as well.

Pinning my hopes to the rooting potionery.
