I have a BUNCH of them... Use them for looks or timber (I got $100+ a log for them) but they suck as far as a habitat tree is concerned. They are shade tolerant and they produce a very dense canopy so they easily shade out a lot understory. If you have them in your yard keep them away from building as you will be constantly digging the leaves and seeds out of your gutters. Here they seem to prefer the more upland soils while the silver and red maples prefer the lower wetter soils. When the loggers came thru I told them to take every one of them they wanted...and they still left too many. I have not seen that they stump sprout well either (at least not the larger ones) and I also have had poor luck hinging the large ones as well. I have much more luck with those sort of responses to the soft maples. They make decent firewood.

I'll agree that sugar maples aren't great trees for deer. I don't have a lot on my place as it was high graded at least once before I bought it. I do have some on one end and nothing grows underneath them...besides shitloads of sugar maple seedlings and the white spruces I've planted. Those seedlings get hammered by deer every year, to the point of preventing them from growing much beyond 3'.
There's a small lake about 2 miles from me, the dirt road we live on goes past the north end of the lake. In the fall the view is simply breathtaking on a sunny day. I'm glad that guy hasn't removed all of the sugar maples (he does do some tapping so that helps keep the maples around)

My wife has a family cabin on Clitherall Lake by Battle Lake--7 acres. It is now owned by her uncle. Full of sugar maples, and in the fall it is Top 10 for prettiest place I have seen.

Sugar maples are one of the predominate trees growing on my land. The previous owner had it select cut just before I bought it. The millions of sapling sugar maples that came up after it was logged were a hit with the deer.

I see some are tapping sugar maples now? When is the best time typically?

I see some are tapping sugar maples now? When is the best time typically? People in our area have been tapping for a few weeks. Temperature dependent on how long it lasts.

I see some are tapping sugar maples now? When is the best time typically? Here’s it’s the same time walleye are running. Late February through early April. Highs in the 40s lows in the 20s. It’ll stop running for a day or two if the nighttime temps don’t go below 30. Here this morning the low was 22. It got up to 70 so it ran great today but, will stop for a few days because the lows aren’t going under 30 until Saturday.

I've maples in the yard and had a 40 that was loaded with them. I the yard they are very messy. In the woods they do nothing for habitat but are great for lowering your taxes if you tap them.
