I am not sure how far I will go with this project, but this is the old cow yard that has not had cattle on it for 30 years. Grass growth has been far better than the surrounding areas. Perhaps I should start with a soil test. I have had an offer to test some pear trees for cold hardiness or I might go with some dolgo seedlings.

If you go with pears, check into their fireblight resistance

If you go with pears, check into their fireblight resistance Do you see much fire blight Stu? That orchard guy from Vermont that I saw last year said he’d never had it in his orchard in 30+ years. He had lots of varieties of apples and pears and frankentrees. I found it hard to believe because I’ve seen it on my land and at home.

No, but I have purposely not planted any known fireblight magnet pears either.

I’d like to spend a couple days with that guy talking fruit trees but, that won’t happen this year.

If you go with pears, check into their fireblight resistance I won’t have as good of air flow back there and you make a good point. I was thinking that after 30 years of no cattle, there should not be so much nitrogen to spur on fireblight.
