my pumpkin strip had more weeds than last year, but some extra hand weeding has helped out. The plot was fertilized before the recent rain, so it should really fill in soon. The pumpkin row closest to the corn is doing better since that row was shaded a little from the afternoon sun. That one scorching hot week really cooked things in the sandy sections, but they are recovering nicely.

So what kind of fertilizer do you throw at pumpkins? Ours in the garden are going crazy. We threw some 10-10-10 in it this spring and tilled it in but that’s been it.

A couple weeks ago I sprinkled some 20-10-10 around each plant and last week I ran the atv spreader over everything with a heavy shot of esn urea.
I was hoping urea and rain would jump start things after that hot, dry week had them looking rough. That fertilizer combined with extra weeding seems to have really helped.

Are they a heavy nitrogen user?

I read that they can use nitrogen early when growing vines, but not much later.
they weren't looking too great two weeks ago and many plants were stunted and yellow. I figured some weeding and a shot of nitrogen might kick start them and hopefully smother some weeds. It seems to have worked well since they look much better now.
I'll probably add a little 20-10-10 fertilizer in a couple weeks but that should be it.

The pumpkins send down secondary roots along the vines, so I think an early shot of nitrogen that helps get the vine system going is a big benefit. Then in theory at least those secondary roots can suck up nutrients from a much larger ground area and the plants can fend for themselves if needed. Time will tell how this turns out, but I'm optimistic that I'll be in good shape this fall if the deer are hungry for pumpkins.

the pumpkin plot is starting to fill in nicely despite no recent rain. The pumpkin vines are filling into the adjacent corn and brassica strips. Rain is in the forecast tonight and if we pick up an inch the pumpkins should really take off. I saw a baseball sized pumpkin today and tons of flowers, so things are looking good.

I’ll have to get a pic of ours tomorrow. They are doing great in our garden plot. We’ve got a ton of flowers and some pumpkins the size of a muskmelon. I want to try watermelon and cukes in the garden next year. Pumpkins in our 1 acre field. I can see why deer haven’t touched them yet. Prickly little bastards.

Unless you are planning on making a BUNCH of pickles, or going out of your way to give them to other folks, be careful with how many cucumber plants you put in, fucking things grow like weeds and produce like like them too! you'll have more than you know what to do with and you'll damn near be picking them everyday once they start to throw fruit.

First attempt at pumpkins in the garden. They are taking over everything. Will be interesting to see how they do. Would like a few for Halloween!

You both have some nice pumpkins growing. It's pretty crazy how fast they grow and how much they can produce from just a couple planted seeds.
