Speaking of pumpkins, look at the pumpkins still in this field in Champlin at 610 and 169. Not sure what the deal is. There is about 30 acres of pumpkins here. Wonder how they planted them. I'm guessing with tillage because they look so nice.

There's a vegetable farmer near us that plants some pretty large pumpkin patches ever year. Ever year he just disks up thousands of the leftover pumpkins and if his pumpkin field happens to be near any woods the local deer herd eats pretty well that winter.
I'm not sure how he plants them, but he has a really old and small tractor and cultivator that he uses to drive between the rows to dig up the weeds before the vines take over.

I had a noxious weed free spot on virgin soil up north. I added some bags of cheap Walmart soil and brought in Canadian thistles. I suppose it could have been in seed blends, but it started where I added the bagged compost and top soil. Solid point. Thank you. Could you just dig up a bucket of dirt from nearby and accomplish the same thing?

Could you just dig up a bucket of dirt from nearby and accomplish the same thing? Probably. But what this economy needs is me to spend, spend, spend. I was thinking potting soil may be more fertile.

I could see one of the pumpkins from my stand tonight. The rest were around a corner and not visible. It was a ways off. But, it was big and orange and had a hole in it. Looked hollow.

I had a grand total of 13 pumpkins in my inaugural attempt. These are the only two left. The rest of them are completely gone. Bears or deer took them all. I think I’ll do more next year.

Six were squabbling over pumpkins and squash. They ate a few apples and then headed to the corn.

Over the last 3-4 nights, deer ate most all of the pumpkins we previously had by the house for Halloween. I dumped them back down by the garden where they had grown originally. I'd guess right around 300 lbs. of pumpkins...I'll likely grow them again next year.

Some of the squash I had just thrown on the lawn by the garden. My wife started moving them to the compost and I said to just leave them alone. Last night, one old girl was chasing the young ones away from the compost pile.

The pumpkins and squash are all cleaned up. The deer headed to the corn early, tonight.
