I've been watering pumpkins and clover west of the house the last couple nights. I could buy a bunch of pumpkins for the cost of a new well pump I'm sure. What is it about pumpkins. They are likely the most fun stuff to grow. I think I like growing pumpkins just to give them to the grandkid. Of course, adding a whole bunch of deer chow isn't a bad thing either.

Can't believe how good they look w/ how bad the drought has been. We can only water so much w/ no running water out there.

Mine will have droopy leaves on hot, sunny afternoons but by the next morning they look good again. I've been giving each mound a dose of Miracle Gro (tomato formula) weekly. I don't know if I'll continue doing that as they get bigger or not.

A couple "early girl" tomatoes. Might let them ripen another day or three on the counter. It's close to the 57 days (listed on the sticker) since I planted them. Pulled my remaining kohlrabi as they hadn't grown in two weeks. Too hot for them.

I don't think we have any early varieties out there, almost all of them are heirlooms/beefsteak types. We do have a cherry and a paste tomato. I would have thought we'd have had some cherries by now. We've been eating kohlrabi for a few weeks now. I'm just about sick of them. We should have enough cukes for the first batch of creamy cukes soon

We really need to hook some real rain soon. I've got a brandywine tomato plant. Looking forward to that one the most. What are the amish paste ones used for? I've seen them just have never had one.

I talked my wife into trying the paste tomato this year. She makes many, many jars of salsa every year. I think the paste tomato will be a good addition to that salsa. I'm also hoping she decides to make some spaghetti sauce this year. The paste would be good for that too. Dry, sunny summers like this are actually good garden years for us. I can control the moisture with sprinklers/soaker hoses. Fungal diseases aren't as prevalent either. Our main garden is on some heavy ground, in rainy years our garden doesn't do so well.

I’m jealous of you guys. No cukes have started to form and very few tomatoes. The plants are tall and green but very little fruit. I am filling up with water again but am about ready to give up.

I've got a bunch of tomatoes growing. I just planted 4 plants this year in weed matting as an experiment. But my mom decided to trim the tops off all of my plants last week. I thought a deer had got them I'm like WTF! Everything I've read says to trim the bottom branches.

That allows more air flow and better ripening.

I spent the weekend at the cabin and checked on things last night when we returned. My pumpkins finally sprouted with the 1" of rain we received about a week ago. They have a lot of ground to make up since they sprouted a month later than normal, but at least there's a chance.

My father in law....used to raise pumpkins to compete at the county fair for largest pumpkins. I had given him some samples of powdered milk and cheese and such from samples sent into the testing labs I worked for back in time. He rigged up the means to connect an "IV Drip" looking device to feed the milk and cheese to the pumpkin runners. Not sure if they provided allot to the pumpkins......but he grew some real monsters.

They do all kinds of crazy shit.

Pumpkin irrigating again. Seems they do okay with heavy weekend watering. That works out well with my back porch sitting and beer drinking schedule
