I hadn't looked at the pumpkins west of the house since last Sunday. Damn deer are eating the leaves.

Maybe this drought year has really limited their natural options. I found it odd as well. Prickly, nasty pumpkin leaves instead of something more palatable? All I can figure is water content. The pumpkins west of the house have been getting watered. Deer are also eating the clover out there. I'm guessing most of the available browse(there's plenty in the woods) has lower water content...

I would think they would move towards other browse if you get some rain, but your pumpkins could be in trouble if it stays dry. My pumpkins only sprouted in early July, but they are actually growing pretty well with this warm weather and a little rain the last week. They have a lot of ground to make up to produce fruit, but maybe it is possible with a late frost.

I can remember a yearling deer eating squash leaves . I opened our window and pounded on the siding with my hand and the deer just kept on eating. This only happened one time that I remember.

I'm pretty sure I've eliminated that threat. I haven't seen a woodchuck out there since the last one I shot over a month ago.

Another weekend of pumpkin watering. Deer ate the largest green fruit that was set, a day or so ago. I'm 99% certain that I'm wasting time and well pump life trying to grow pumpkins in a major drought. Unless it rains soon, I may just toss in the towel and say F it

Unless it rains soon, I may just toss in the towel and say F it I wont get to my land until Tuesday. Kinda afraid of what I will see. Much of the higher ground was crunchy and toasted last I was there (Thursday) and a few more hot days without rain wont do the rest any good. I gotta develop a fall plan with what I got now.....unless we get a major rain on this Wed (plausible). I've not had measurable rain in weeks.

The sections of the houseplot that I haven't watered are bare ground except for a few tiny alfalfa plants here and there and some fall panicum. My north plot has some very short clover, that plot usually has standing water in spots until the end of June. Not the case this year. It's been water free since around Memorial Day. If we don't get multiple inches of rain over the course of a week or so, I think planting anything will be a waste of time at this point.

Are there bare spots in the swamp where you could scatter turnip seed?
