I planted my pumpkins around the 3rd of June and about 1/3 stayed dormant. We got .7" of rain last week and now most of the dormant pumpkins have popped. I'm pretty happy about that. This is the first time that has happened since I've been planting a large number of pumpkins. They seem to know when they have enough moisture to survive, so I'm hopeful for a decent crop. If they get enough rain to germinate and they send down a taproot fast I think they should have a decent chance.
I put down a little urea around a bunch of pumpkins tonight, so hopefully that helps out.

my no-till pumpkins are holding their own. This is a patch that I can't reach with my hose,so I'm pretty happy with how they are doing despite dry conditions. I gave them a little fertilizer and if the rain in the forecast actually makes it here I'm hoping for them to take off.

They were too small to show up will in pictures, but i found evidence of my full season brassicas sprouting between the pumpkin rows. I overseeded kale right after spraying the pumpkin patch. The goal was to have something fill up that space rather than just weeds. Eventually the pumpkin vines will smother it all, but I'm hoping to have a few bonus late season deer calories hiding under the vines.

My vine crops were doing poorly during the drought and I gave them a very weak dose of Boostem. I maybe mixed it at .1 strength or weaker, It seemed to help. Some kind of fertilizer? I've given all of the vines a few weak shots of MiracleGrow after watering them. My neighbor used to give each Hill a quart of this about the time the vines were beginning to crawl. i wouldn’t use that much in the current drought. Bloom booster from other sources would probably also work.

Mine are alive. But there’s been some browsing. I gave them a shake, shake, shake of 10-10-10 from the coffee can. I’m letting what look like volunteer brassica plants live. Some of them look better than others. In the empty spots where I didn’t get pumpkin plants I planted some 80 day acorn squash. Table queen.

That first pic is how most of the pumpkins I've tried to grow in the past look.

That first pic is how most of the pumpkins I've tried to grow in the past look. I'm not sure if it's deer or rabbits. If I was growing in a garden at home I might just fashion little screen enclosures to put over them while they are so young and tender. But I'll be damned if I'm going to cage my pumpkin plot.

I'm pretty sure groundhogs were the culprits on my old place. I've sprayed my young plants a few times with a few different repellents. So far, so good.

I just noticed the weed hiding between the two plants in the middle picture.

I fired up the pumpkin sprinkler again a bit ago. The plot isn't drought stressed and I want to keep it that way. Plenty of vines with their first blooms.

I had a notion to try that too, but I keep forgetting when the time arrives. I wonder if the deer wouldn't eat them even if they weren't mature anyway.

I went out to scatter a few cups of milorganite on each pumpkin/squash mound a bit ago. I need to snap some pics soon, the vines are really taking off. Between the watering and the rain, the clover/alfalfa/chicory mix has also taken off. It's not quite "lush" yet, but it's getting close

I always have a lot of squash and pumpkins that aren't fully ripe when the first frost kills the vine. The deer will eat the fully mature vegetables first, but later in the winter they are less picky and eat even the young squash.

My June 1st planting date has typically worked great, but this year that planting time is about when the rain quit falling. I wish I planted about 2 weeks earlier.
