Looking back on my records it's been almost 2 years to the date that I started making knives. In that time I've sold, donated or given away 83 knives. I have 4 or 5 in stock for shows that haven't sold and haven't counted them. So I just want to say thanks to everyone here who has purchased one of my knives. My first build was just a lets see if I can make a knife. I would have never thought it would turn into what it has.

I've been wanting to do it and with orders and hesitation it hasn't happened. Well its going to happen, I have 2 blanks cut and ground ready to be heat treated and tempered from 14C28N Stainless Steel. Heat treat is about the same as 1095 high carbon, only it has a higher more critical temp and a soak time at that temp. Quenching is where the differences start. It can be oil quenched but it's not recommended unless you use a very specific oil. So I'm going to do a plate quench, how this works is to sandwich the hot blade between 2 pieces of aluminum until it gets to room temp or around 70 degrees. The plates should be at least 7/16" thick, I happened to have some 1/2" so I cut it up to use. A side benefit of quenching between the plate is there will be no warping. After the quench the blades will be cryo treated, they will go into the deep freeze anywhere from 2-20 hours. Coming out of cryo they go straight into the tempering oven for a 2 hour cycle. I'm hoping everything works and turns out as the 14C28N is 3x the cost of 1095. We have plans for today and I don't think I'll have the time so Saturday is the day.

Well so far so good, heat-treated, plate quenched and ready for cryo.

I like the looks of that Mike. Would make a good butchering knife. I like a good and long sharp blade to slide under that silvery skin

When I go to the shows I always come home without a fillet knife from stock. We always use a fillet knife when cutting venison for the same reason you mention.

^ I made a few letter items back in Jr High School.......it was part of our shop classes. I think I stamped a wallet and . Anyway.....one thing we did was to soak the leather in water throughout the tamping process. This made the tamping much easier and more permanent....as it did not "bounce back" from the impact. Not sure if you were doing this? After it was dry....we would then stain it and put on a preservative coat of ??

If you get it to wet you smash rather than stamp the leather. I did say that I had the scrap piece pre dampened. It also helps to have a solid bench to reduce bounce. The bench I was working on was not where I normally tool but it worked for the video. The types and amount of different stamps/patterns available is just nuts. Slowly I'll add to my collection.

I finished this one and it's getting delivered tomorrow. Stone washed blade etch with the client's business name. Since he guides bear hunts it has a bear claw pin and bear stamped into the sheath. The handle is black walnut which has an unique grain. Tooled the sheath and did a little airbrush shading. I was given artistic freedom with this one.
