When will the rye seed be mature enough to grow once it is mowed? This is what my rye in question looks like now.
I'd like to have some free rye seed in my clover plot, but I'm not sure how to tell when it is ripe. The 10 day forecast looks wet, so mowing might not be a bad idea now.

I’d wait for it to turn brown. Mine is now brown but I may hold off on mowing until I’m ready to put down other seed. For me that would be late July or early August.

Doesn’t look ripe to me.

If grain is green, it isn't even close to being mature

Well that's what I assumed, but I hoped it wasn't the case. I was hoping the rye would mature before the weeds, but that seems unlikely.
Rye seed is cheap though, so I'll mow just before the weeds develop seeds and spread some rye seeds in a month

^^^ Exactly what I was going to say. Rye is too cheap to spend much time worrying about saving some.

Pics of my rye, mow in July? Should re-seed, correct?

Nice rye. I don't know what the name of the weed is that you have growing under your rye, but it can't be easily killed with round-up when it gets big. I wouldn't let that go to seed if you can help it.
What are your plans for that field?

Marestail is it - I knew someone here would have the name. I spent some time last weekend pulling that stuff by hand since I knew it was bad stuff even though I couldn't remember the name.

There's ragweed in there too. Ranks among the best for summer protein. That must be Iowa rye? That damn near looks viable already.
