I'm pretty sure at least one of you know something about this...
I want to make the dock more attractive to fish. I grew up on rivers and the lack of movement in a pond bugs me. If someone was to hook up a solar powered pump to the dock (or an aerator) would it attract fish? I'm not concerned about making it "healthier", just wondering if fish would like it and congregate? A kill plot of sorts.

Never tried anything with moving water and fish feeding habits. Never seen anything either. As Art posted,the feeder would definitly work

Been watching a lot of the PB on the YT. The dude that runs that mentioned some guys making observations of minnows being drawn to the bubble stream from a diffuser.

Sorry but I kind of have no interest in a feeder. I've thought about setting one on the dock... but my attempts at feeding deer or quail have always waned away pretty quickly, just not in my makeup.
My time in creeks and rivers has always shown fish in relation to currents, eddies, riffles, water level rises, etc. Fish find currents to swim against and to actively feed in. Make me wonder what would happen if there was a current in a pond. Would it become a hot-spot? Would fish hang out there just because it feels good? Would it create a higher O2 spot? Would it attract bait fish? I don't know and I can't seem to find it on the internet.
I might just have to try it for myself. I wonder what setup like this would look like? A pump, a battery, a solar charger. I wonder if you even need a battery, just let it run directly from the panel with an inline regulator? I don't need it running at night.
Thanks for the input guys! You have me thinking.

On a side note I was down there an hour ago cleaning the dock off from the weekends partying and threw a spinner out... drug it through a said Christmas tree... lost the biggest bass I've ever seen. I've never mounted a deer or fish for myself, always waiting for a big one, I had this one to the taxidermist (in my mind) the moment I saw it. Even had my shoes off ready to jump in once it was close enough to grab. Dang! |

Great idea, either one will promote more insect life and hatches from that pond, which will help with the overall biodiversity and pond health. I think getting a pump which will run off solar and still push enough gpm to create a noticeable amount of current moving through a pond as big as yours is going to be an issue. Aerators, mnfish is your guy for that.

Wiscwhip, I have no illusions of doing something big enough to affect the whole pond, but I might be able to do a little hotspot.
Ive got some solar panels, a couple of little 110v pumps, and an inverter. I might be able to do some tinkering and come up with a working gizmo for nothing but a little time.

Look into what the waterfowlers use to keep ponds open in the winter time. They make commercial units just for moving the water to keep it from freezing. I am not sure if it will help draw fish or not....but it's worth a try. when I take my kids fishing it's in the summer time and fishing in the shade or deeper water is the key. I have even seen artificial islands created with structure going down into the water. Another trick is a bug zapper light. The zapper kills the bugs the bugs feed the fish. I have also seen this done with a wire cage and road kill....as the meat rots the maggots fall into the water and feed the fish as well. You can also get bluegill to feed on floating fish food as well...and they become very trainable. You keep a schedule and they will come running...I mean swimming. We used to do this with channel cats....the bluegill would get some and every once in a while a big flash would get a bluegill! The fishing could be dead.....you could throw some dirt or gravel out and just the sound of it hitting the water would bring fish in to investigate even if it was the "scheduled time".....they would also show up per the scheduled time even if you wasn't feeding them as well.....just some ideas.

Get one of those huge buckets that holds 1,000 gallons of water and tips over when its almost full. Waterparks have them. Fish may not care but the kids will like it.
