The place I hunt is loaded with Walnuts. I hate 'em. Wish the deer would eat them! Squirrels love it though. Can't get my food plots to grow around them. I've made a few knife handles from black walnut and they looked really nice. If anyone had a walnut burl I bet that would really be something. I've seen a lot of walnut trees, but I don't recall ever seeing a walnut burl.

I've seen a lot of walnut trees, but I don't recall ever seeing a walnut burl. Most any tree can get or have a burl. Normally some sort of injury starts it. Granted the most common is a maple. I've seen some very beautiful things made from the burl of walnut and some other species too. Bowls, coffee tables, furniture, pens, etc.....and of course, gunstocks. Walnut was always my choice for wood working back in my high school shop days. One of my old neighbors got quite wealthy buying walnut trees from the farmers in southern MN. He cane from Missouri and knew the market for walnut and had some good connections to market the timber. He bought lots of high quality walnut trees from the farmers in the MN river valley and exported the wood to Japan. The used the logs for veneer furniture when the walnut was quite popular with their culture. Lots of rumors how he really scalped some farmers who had little idea of the value of that timber. Dunno.....but he became one very wealthy dude.
