I just wanted to show you my (1) walnut tree that survived in MN. I think I planted 20, just one survivor, but I did not protect them like I should have. It had walnuts last year.

How old is that tree? The squirrels will thank you.
I like walnuts and on good soil they can grow really fast.

I have two walnuts in my yard. They have had walnuts for quite a few years, often skipping a year.
I planted them from seed.

You’ll have hundreds of young walnut trees everywhere in a few years. Depending upon what other trees you plant that may not be a good thing. Don’t plant fruit trees near them as the juglone chemical that walnut roots produce will kill them.
I have lots of young walnuts show up each year in my wife’s flowers from the squirrels.

Yep, this is what happened on my old place. Walnuts were like weeds there. I hate everything about walnuts.

We had an existing walnut in the yard, so yes there are a quite a few young walnuts growing on this 40. Squirrels everywhere and they bury plenty.

Only real value a walnut has as far as I am concerned is for timber. I have 2 large ones at the edge of my yard (poorly shaped) and the mess they make and the mess related to them is just a pain in the ass. The nuts them selves either need picked up or rot. When they rot they attract bugs in the soil which attract moles. Then the nuts your hitting with a mower and turning into a projectile OR your out in the hard and stepping on them in bare feet. People should never have these in their yard. The south side of my property has a lot of them because it's a flood plain and I have made some good money off of them before....but other than for feeding squirrels....I see no habitat value to them. I need to plant some on a hill side I have as a memorial to my grandfather who planted a grove that I like to visit. But they will not be in an area where I have to really contend with them. Walnut trees belong in the woods!

I like mature ones, they are cash machines.

I like mature ones, they are cash machines. I could use some of that white stuff right now. It’s way too hot here.

The logger I've worked with wouldn't take a yard tree if you gave it to him since a lot of them have nails in them. He might find some goofball with a home mill that is desperate for wood, but there's also a chance that guy drops the tree on the house.
Woods grown walnuts are very valuable though.
A month before we bought our latest place, we made an offer on a property that had the most walnuts I've ever seen. It was almost unbelievable, I've seen a lot of woods but never anything like that. Maybe 75 were very big and ready to harvest, but there were thousands of younger walnuts maybe a decade or two from harvest. I figured pruning young walnut trees would be a new hobby, but it wasn't meant to be as our full priced offer wasn't accepted.

The place I hunt is loaded with Walnuts. I hate 'em. Wish the deer would eat them! Squirrels love it though. Can't get my food plots to grow around them.

A friend wants me to make him a natural finish fish decoy from walnut with copper fins. I haven’t started yet.
